I know that I will be accused of being a boring old fart, but I really
don't think that just about every match (except, it seems, important
ones involving NZ) should be interrupted by some idiot streaking. The
image it sends to the world is "rugby isn't to be taken seriously, no
not even the premier event". I must have watched hundreds of football
WC games over the years, even attended a handful, and never saw a
streaker at any of them. Why? Because football takes every game
seriously regardless of who is playing. And so should rugby. It is
disrespectful to the players, to the game and to the host country.

I do hope NZ is punishing these people. I assume there is a similar
law in NZ to other countries where invading the pitch is a criminal
offence. I would go further than just fining offenders. A lot of
those doing it are probably not rugby fans, because if they were
they'd be watching the game, but I would like to see the rugby
authorities taking action by default apart from any criminal
proceedings. Offenders should be banned for life from attending
internationals and if they are a member of a rugby club they should be
banned from the game - be it as player, spectator, whatever - for a
meaningful period, say three years. Or life. They obviously don't
care about the game so why should anyone care about them? I would
also slap a heavy fine on the host nation for every time it happens as
it's not that difficult to police.

It's rare that you find areas where rugby can learn from football by
way of crowd behaviour, but football has a grip on this - why doesn't
rugby? Action must be taken before the next tournament because it
really is a negative thing. I know there will be those here who think
it's just a bit of fun, but I'd like to see rugby growing as a sport
rather than as a joke on YouTube.

Why do you care what the world thinks of rugby? I don't think it should
be taken too seriously.

I agree. It might be funny and novel to people who are still living in the
70's, but it's been old-hat here for decades. It would be interesting to see
how many of the people who think streaking is the greatest thing that ever
happened, but I hope none of them ever complain about games being disrupted
by scrum resets and slow lineouts, or pretend injuries.

I said before I'd rather see a streaker get cut in half by someone like Nonu
or Botha, and left to die wherever he lands. They're the equivalent of those
saddos who pull stupid faces behind someone being interviewed, or who clutch
their replica shirt as they sing their anthem respectfully, but start
jumping up and down acting like a 12-year-old when they see themselves on
the big screen.

seriously tho... I wouldn't go as far as dave but I share his pain.
Its just boring.

Michael Angelo streaked at lords in 1975, which was real news at the
time - UKs first streaker ... at a big sport occassion.
Then Erica Roe at Twickenham in 1982. She was alright cos she huge
norks and it creeted a mildly amusing anecdote about Billy Beaumont's
bum.

Since then its been boring.

norks or not.

There were a couple of Aussie strippers who (in a naked exhibition of
self promotion) did a topless streak in the 1991 Bledisloe Cup match in
Auckland. It was the only highlight of the match (won 6-3 by NZ).

But has there been an outbreak of streaking at this years RWC? I only
heard of one, at the England v Argentina game. And I didn't see that
myself because, well, England and Argentina were playing. I understand
that guy will be discharged without conviction provided be makes a
contribution to charity, said to be of $500. He has not been banned from
attending future matches.

There was of course also a fully clothed streaker at at least one of the
Nude Blacks games, escorted from the field by a guy naked except for his
policeman's helmet.

Yes, Mark what about 1991 WP vs Free State? A streaker tackled FC Smit
in the final minute and prevented him from scoring the winning try for WP.

http://secure.financialmail.co.za/06/1027/regulars/didyh.htm

"Brian Baenhoff is the streaker who changed the outcome of the final
qualifying game for the 1991 Currie Cup by running on to the field stark
naked and tackling Western Province lock F C Smit as he was on his way
to clinch victory."

The army-navy rugby match in the UK used to attract about 10-15
streakers per game, almost all of them very, very drunk naval ratings.
Year on year it was the same thing. And then it stopped - the order
went out that the punishment had changed.

But while they were nearly always blokes, the sight of the Army
backline running towards a heavily built young lady - I assume she
must have been carried on ships as ballast - who wiggled her bare
chest at the oncoming runners was hard to beat for comic value.

If someone interferes with the players, sure I'd be annoyed. But it's a
sport, a game.

I also don't really share the opinion of many who think that the more
exposure, the more money, the better for the sport.

My History teacher, Geoff Lewis used to commentate on Bath games when
I was at school. An acquaintance of mine decided to streak at a Neath
game which I was listening to on the radio. Geoff simply said 'We have
a streaker. Believe me when I say there's nothing much to see, but
since i am here to describe what I see, it looks like an olive.' Bloke
got stick for months.

Now, I know we're talking plastic money here, but still, $7,000 NZ dollars
still sounds like a lot of money for a shag.
