victory may have been orchestrated by peppermint sweets, with former batsman
Marcus Trescothick revealing that he shone the ball by sucking on the breath
fresheners, with breathtaking results.
The unplayable reverse swing generated by Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff,
which tormented the Australians, may have been caused by Murray Mints -
which, as with other artificial substances, is illegal when shining the
ball. The saliva from these mints aided swinging, Trescothick wrote in his
autobiography Coming Back To Me.
"I was firmly established as the man in charge of looking after the ball
when we were fielding. It was my job to keep the shine on the new ball for
as long as possible with a bit of spit and a lot of polish. And through
trial and error I finally settled on the best type of spit for the task at
hand," he wrote in an excerpt that has appeared in Britain's News Of The
World newspaper. Trescothick retired from international cricket in March due
to an ongoing battle with a stress-related illness.
"It had been common knowledge in county cricket for some time that certain
sweets produced saliva which, when applied to the ball for cleaning
purposes, enabled it to keep its shine for longer and therefore its swing."
Australian paceman Nathan Bracken was verbally lashed by Jones after the
2005 series for suggesting the use of mints was common in English cricket,
but he has always said he was misquoted by the media, and did not want to
re-enter the debate yesterday. It's also believed the rest of Bracken's
teammates have not seen the funny side of Trescothick's claims.
Trescothick, who also used the mints during the 2001 Ashes, recalled a
comical moment in the Headingley Test: "For the first time, as I dived to
gather the ball at square-leg, I landed on my side and a shower of Murray
Mints spewed out of my trouser pocket all over the grass right in front of
the umpire.
"Fortunately neither he nor the two batsmen seemed to take much notice as I
scrambled around on all fours trying desperately to gather in the sweets
before they started asking awkward questions."
Trescothick was the second-highest run scorer in the 2005 series behind
current England captain Kevin Pietersen. However, it was English bowling
that was credited with the boilover, as Australia's batsmen looked all at
sea against a barrage of deliveries swinging wildly in both directions.
The 2-1 win by England was their first Ashes victory in 18 years and the
entire squad received OBEs or MBEs.
The impact of using the mints was discovered by accident, it seems.
Warwickshire's Dermot Reeve noticed that his bowlers somehow had the ability
to keep the ball swinging far longer than any team they faced, but no one
knew why, Trescothick wrote.
"He realised the player in charge of polishing and keeping the ball clean
was his top-order batsman Asif Din and what he did to keep his concentration
levels up was chewing extra strong mints.
"It took a while for word to get around the circuit but once it did the
sales of sweets near the county grounds of England went through the roof.
"I tried Asif's confection of choice but couldn't get on with them. Too dry.
So I had a go at Murray Mints and found they worked a treat."
It's unlikely the ICC can open an investigation into the alleged ball
tampering.
India's Rahul Dravid was fined half his match fee for rubbing a cough
lozenge on the ball during a one-day tri-series match against Zimbabwe in
Brisbane in January 2004."

Well Trescothick claimed that it improved the swing and he is not an
Australian. This is why they deliberately, according to him, tampered with
the ball in direct contravention of Law 42. Hardly seems like whinging when
the opposition Captain has admitted that they deliberately broke the Laws of
Cricket to gain an advantage. If only Hair had been allowed to Umpire that
game he would have sorted them out.:-)

I think I probably related this at the time, but in a taxi in Adelaide
after arriving in Oz for the 2001 Lions Tour we were introduced to the
Aussie obsession with cricket. The driver enquired why we were there
and we told him (although the tour never went anywhere near Adelaide
we decided to start and end our journey there thus seeing a bit more
of the country). He thought about this and then said "oh yeah, I
heard about that" and went quiet for a while before basically
repeating over and over again the mantra "England will never beat
Australia at cricket". It didn't matter how may times we told him we
didn't give a flying fuck about cricket he hammered the point home for
no good reason other than (I assume) he didn't rely on tips anyway and
that the world was OK so long as England never beat Australia at
cricket.
Even Aussies I've worked with in Europe seem to find it very difficult
to grasp the fact that your average pom not only has no idea about
cricket but is perfectly at ease with the fact that we're mostly shit
at it. OK, I've started enjoying it the last year or two but mainly
through the enthusiasm of an Indian friend who took me to an India-
Pakistan ODI in Amsterdam and certainly not from talking to
Adelaideans.
