Well, here it is. The Scottish squad for the Commonwealth
Regatta to be held in London, Ontario.

HEAVYWEIGHT MEN -

M 4+ Nicolas Lockhart St. Andrew BC
Richard Court "
Tony McDonnell "
Colin Gibson "
Alistair James Potts (cox) "

Form: Scottish Champions; Silver at British Championships.
Other than that, none really. We thought we'd try a four, and
see if it went quickly. Thankfully, it did. Richard, by the
way, is a lightweight.

M 8 David Nolan Clydesdale ARC
Adrian Brannan Clydesdale ARC
Drew Hendry Aberdeen BC
Gregor Frizzell Aberdeen Uni. BC
Allan Watt Castle Semple RC
Simon Inglis Castle Semple RC
William Brown Stirling AB&SC
Nial Miller Stirling AB&SC
Ian Hauxwell (cox) Aberdeen BC

Form: Bronze at British Championships; the only crew so slow
that they failed to make the selection time. Allowed to
compete on compassionate grounds (ie the selectors wanted to
send an eight...)

M 2- David Riches ?
Graham Smith

Form: Doubts raised as to whether they'd bother to make the
trip; they are, in fact, two of Scotland's best oarsmen, but
may have more pressing engagements.

LIGHTWEIGHT MEN

1x Peter Haining Loch Lomond ARC

Form: Somehow he has been enticed to play with us. That's
where all the money has gone. Alledgedly.

2- Martin Harris Clyde ARC
Gordon Gillespie Clyde ARC

Form: disappointing at Lucerne, but they've probably got the
youngest average crew age, and maybe the most potential too.

4- Kevin Plank Stirling AB&SC
Ross Malone Clydesdale ARC
Jo Kelly "
Mark Hely "

Form: for some reason the SARA think this crew is the bees'
knees; their most memorable achievement was being beaten by a
totally scratch lightweight 4- at Scottish Champs... Failed
to get a medal at the British Champs.

2x Tim Lees London RC
Tom Duke London RC

Form: dunno. Everyone speaks in hushed tones about "Tim and
Tom".

1x Blair Crawford Thames RC

Form: I'm sorry, I've never ever heard of Mr Crawford, but
wish him the best of luck anyway.

OPENWEIGHT WOMEN

4- Alona Bruce Edinburgh Uni. BC
Nicola Robinson Uni. of London WBC
Gillian Lindsay Clydesdale ARC
Kareen Marwick (England somewhere)

Form: serious speed. Fifth in the Grand Final at Lucerne, and
apart from Kareen, all less than 21.

2- Claire Nisbet Edinburgh Uni. BC
Asta Reynisdottir-Geirsson Edinburgh Uni. BC

Form: Won Women's Henley open pairs; Gold at British
Championships. Asta got her British Citizenship yesterday
(really).

1x Fiona Freckleton

Form: Famous GB type, but based down south (as they all are).
Will she come, though?

LIGHTWEIGHT WOMEN

1x Clare MacDougall-Smith Thames Tradesmen

Form: dunno. Cool name though.

4- Krystyna Krassowska Edinburgh Uni. BC
Catherine Lee Clyde ARC
Fiona Richardson "
Kirsy Boyd "

Form: Failed to qualify for the final for their event at the
British. Fourth in the openwight event there, but the winners
were lightweights anyway... Receive (with the M8) the 'bloody
lucky-to-be-going' prize. Perhaps what swung it was their
insistance on wearing bikinis whilst rowing in the middle of
winter (really).

2x Clare MacIntosh Clyde ARC
Maureen McGarvey Clyde ARC

Form: dunno. Ought to know, but don't. Maureen is very nice
though.

More boring stuff:

Reserves - Robert Herridge and Josephine Deasy.

Assorted hangers on:
'Coaches' - Ralph Gillies (M Lwt 2-, W Lwt 2x)
Hamish Burrell (W 4-)
John Bowie (M Lwt 4-)
Stewart James (W Lwt 4-)
Miles Thomas (M Lwt 1x)

Team Manager Mike Haggerty
Assistant Team Manager Tom "can-I-come-too" FitzPatrick
Doctor Robin McGilp
Physiotherapist John Dennis
Driver Ailie Ord.

Curious quote: "Jim MacRitchie has been nominated as the FISA
umpire from Scotland... Peter Morrison will take over on Jim
failing to go." Bad luck Jim.

I should point out that the following crews ONLY are being
funded: M Lwt 1x (Mr Haining);
M Lwt 2- (Martin and Gordon);
W Lwt 1x (Clare MacDougall-Smith);
W 4- (Alona et al.);
and the M Lwt 4- (the fast one. Not.)

The other twenty-eight assorted atheletes have to find masses
of money if they want to go. BUT, we get "1 x one kit bag
with logo" from the SARA for our pains, so it's clearly worth
it.

Alistair James Potts.

PS Anyone who points out that there are only two male
coxswains in Scotland anyway is a spoilsport.

Alistair Potts lists various athletes including:

> 1x Fiona Freckleton
> Form: Famous GB type, but based down south (as they all are). > Will

well, I think from what she was saying last weekend , yes! She was at
the Anglo-French juniors match, and was urgently trying not to be seen
wearing the (quite nice!) ENGLAND polo shirts all the coaches were given
- especially since the event took lace next door to Ban Elms Cottage :-)
She certainly reckoned she was going to do it (also said that she thought
CD (Riches) (with who she teaches and coaches at Westminster) was going
to go.

For those who don't know, Alistair's "famous GB type" covers one of the
only two Brit heavyweight women who has ever got a medal at the Worlds -
bronze in Sydney with Miriam Batten in the 2- a couple of years ago.
