A few years ago I saw rowers wearing "spoof" Beefeater Gin
t-shirts which read "Beefeaters Win" in exactly the same syle as
the Beefeater logo.

Does anyone know if these are still available?

I think you're thinking of the Oxford Brookes University (erstwhile Oxford
Polytechnic) shirts which said "Beavereaters Win" which is really quite
funny.

But not so funny if you're a girl...

Er ... if you're referring to the Oxford Brookes University T-shirts,
they didn't quite say "Beefeaters Win" - I can aver that the the "e" and
"f" were replaced by a few more letters.

Waste of time trying to bring any subtlety to this newsgroup!

I think you're talking about the "Beavereaters Win" spoof perpetrated by
the Poly boys (as they were then). No longer available, and only were as
a swap - they guard their top-squad kit jealously and do not make extras.
However, some other (mostly Oxford) clubs did spoofs too - there were Bee
Eaters and various others. Depends on whether the one you saw was bright
or dark blue.

Okay guys, might have known that Potts and "God" (qv Donnington Bridge)
would have answered you already.

But then, if I don't post _something_ every day, how else can I tell how
many new posts there are on the lynx reader?

Cunning, you see.

Subtlety is boring. Besides, we are rowers and the subtlety bypasses us.

Finally, weren't there shirts that said "BEFATTER GIN"?

The Oxford lightweight men have T-shirts that say 'BE FATTER MEN". It's
amazing how many people don't realize that they're not the genuine thing
(until they take a good look at them).

Debbie,

I suspect the shirts that you saw actually said "Beavereaters Win"

Oxford, England has two fine academic and sporting establishments, the
first is that well known and slightly older group of buildings known as
Oxford University. The second, more brash institution is known as Oxford
Brookes University (formerly Oxford Polytechnic).

All is sweetness and light between the two, except on the river. The Poly Boat
Club as it was when I was there, had this nasty, nagging feeling that we
didn't get the credit we deserved. So after a few beers and watching the Naked
Gun video, the infamous "Beavereaters Win" t-shirt idea was conceived amongst
the Men's Senior squad.

This was in 1989-90, and just about every oarsmen at the Poly during the early
1990s aspired to earn the right to wear one. They are not generally available
nor are they particularly encouraged by the Director of Sport, who told the
Boat Club captain (me) in 1991 "Don't you think its time to move away from
that childish imitation"

I hope that answers your question, satisfies your curiousity and absolves
all the guilt.

ps

The Naked Gun scene that inspired it all is as follows:

Pricella Presley is up on a ladder in the library.
Leslie Neilsen walks in, looks up and says "Nice beaver."
Miss Presley descends the ladder, remarking "Thank you. I had it stuffed this
morning."

Debbie,

The actual T-shirts said "Beavereaters Win", which may not be
quite what you're looking for ;-) The latest incarnation,
Cleavereaters Grin", may be more to your taste, although both I
believe were done by College crews, so possibly not generally
available.

Not only the Beavereaters Win, and the Be Fatter Men, but also, from the
St. Edmund Hall 3rd VIII (the Syndicate), T-shirts with Sainsbury's Gin
written on.

Wouldn't it be wittier (and maybe more accurate) to say

BEAT FATTER MEN ?

The Oxford Mens Lightweights produced shirts with 'BEFATTER MEN'
- I never got mine, probably because they thought I wouldn't fit
into one....

Chris (Jones) there's no point trying to be anonymous if you leave your
Compuserve number in the "from" line.... !

Other than that, I was all set to assume it was Mr. Hardy junior, he of
the winetasting profession and slowly swelling girth...

Hello,

I will be graduating in May 98, from Humboldt State University,
with a B.S. in Kinesiology. After graduation I would like to enter a
graduate program (in exercise performance or sports psychology), while
working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in rowing. If anyone has any
information that may be of some help, I greatly appreciate anything that
may be provided. Thank You.

Sincerely,

Curtis Gramelspacher
