Mounting a smart phone on the foot stretcher?

I would like to experiment with what my smart phone can do by way of
giving me GPS-derived instantaneous speed measurements, but to do that I
need to mount the thing where I can see it. So of course I'm faced with
two incompatible factors:

1. Keep the thing safe from water in its Aquapac (like this
http://store.aquapac.net/product/waterproof-phone-case-mini/ )

2. Mount the thing with (presumably) a bodged version of an in-car
holder such as this
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/olixar-universal-smartphone-windscreen-in-car-holder-p12635.htm
, modified with gaffer tape or nuts and bolts or whatever.

Does anyone have personal experience of how to mount a phone that's in
its water-excluding holder?

(Yes, I am looking at the expensive option of getting a stand-alone
rowing-oriented GPS, but they are, well, expensive)

Hi Henry,

My current mount is pretty similar to the aquapac + gaffer tape solution, it works but it isn't pretty. I've seen a few mounts around the boat house made up from layers of cut polycarbonate sheeting to provide the housing with enough meat to hold a couple of screws and a action camera style mount. The latter has the disadvantage of rendering the touch screen untouchable but seem to work pretty well. There are a number of plastic things available on a popular internet shop site but almost all have far from robust designs as far as water proofing goes.

I'm hesitant to use my actual phone for this and use an old spare at the moment in it's place.

I use an AquaPac pouch, plus 2 mounting options based on which boat I'm in:

1. In my single I use one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ZH4WYP8?ref_=sr_1_8

where the mount is attached to a cross bar I have going across the boat
just behind the stretcher.

2. In other boats where I have less control over what is in the boat
itself I use one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Heemepink-Flexible-Spider-Universal-Samsung/dp/B0158XTWG6/ref=pd_sim_sbs_263_4

It attaches to most stretcher bars, wing riggers, or even shoes. Most of
the time it is fine, but it has to be said the mounting is less rigid
that option 1.

Henry,

Is it your boat?

Universal mount tricky, individual mount easier once parameters known.

I printed a simple mount for my situation and the phone rubber bands to that.

I used it as a stroke rate for a blind sculler in a 2x and it spoke the stroke ...kind of worked :)

Yes it is; Carl made it for me and I took delivery a couple of months
ago. I wish my sculling was of the same quality as the boat.

That spider gadget that Kit referred to looks useful; I don't want to
start attaching things more permanently until I see whether the phone is
up to the task.

And maybe I should find out more about this 3D printing lark.

3d printing is a lot of fun. I've designed a few bicycle widgets (computer, light and camera mounts) so far and have been meaning to get to some special rowing mounts for StrokeCoaches and the like.

Do you have anything to mount to? An nk mount?

Here are a number of ideas (including mine, to the crossbar)

https://forum.rowinginmotion.com/t/mounting-your-smartphone-in-the-boat/24

The rigidity demands for the mounts to run rowinginmotion are probably higher as it uses the accelerometer to produce the stroke acceleration profile.

A cheap waterproof case and then this NK mount might be a simple way to go

Otherwise this post showing the life proof case may be of interest

Ooh you finally got one, lovely! I know exactly what you mean about not being good enough for the boat :-)

Hi Henry,

we have solved one part of the equation with our new smartphone mount specifically made for rowing. It's a padded metal bracket that fits wing riggers but also supports mounting on any straight surface.

Here's more details about it: https://www.rowinginmotion.com/rowing-motion-smartphone-mount/

With waterproof cases it's highly dependent on the model of device you have, there are simply too many for a general solution. Luckily there's a growing list of very decent smartphones that are already waterproof (in Android land at least). Those fit very well with our mount, and you can use one of those inexpensive silicon cases/sleeves that go for below 5$ to stick the mounting pads too.

If you need to waterproof your smartphone there's a range of 3rd party cases available, namely Lifeproof (really good but expensive), Seidio Obex (similar to lifeproof, haven't tested themselves) and a range of cheap "bag"-like solutions like Aquapac or Smartskin. Better chances to find something for very popular smartphone models.

Johannes

Possibly a stupid question but does it attach to the phone case with velcro? Is this secure enough for RIM?

I'm thinking about making one fits onto a spring clamp that can clamp onto the footstretcher.

Yes it attaches the phone case with 3M Dual Lock Velcro. That way you can quickly and securely attach/detach your phone from the mount. If you have a waterproof phone and don't need a case, I recommend getting one of those cheap silicon sleeves/cases for your smartphone and stick the velcro on their. That way you won't have anything directly on your phone.

The mount is definitely secure enough for RiM, in fact it is better than any of the other methods I've seen so far. The foam padding on the mount dampens vibrations and the friction it creates ensures everything stays in place, which is important to avoid offset/calibration errors.
