We have recently discussed what an ideal club member should do, I was
wondering people's opinions on what makes a club good - e.g. what are
the most important parts of a club?

Sure it would vary slightly with different sized clubs and clubs with
different aims, but in general....?

A good club should be like an iced fruit cake.

There needs to a sound firm base. This is made up from the social
members, has beens, parents , supporters and volunteers.

The bulk of the club needs a good rich mix, with as many flavours as
possible. This is represented by the active members of all types and
standards.

Then there is the icing. All clubs need to be able to sell themselves
and need some gloss or star members who will be the window dressing
that attract sponsors and, most importantly, new members.

All these componants are necessary.

Without the base, the whole structure will be on unsteady ground and in
danger of collapse.

There are clubs that try to do without the mix in the middle and, as
with icing, this can prove to be very brittle and can easily shatter.

Is that a fruitcake with blue and white icing. Do you remember the
recipe though?

First and foremost make sure there is a clear mission
and goals of the club. It makes it easier down the road
when decisions have to be made on how to spend limited
resources, and for what purpose you are raising the money
or putting in a lot of effort in volunteer time.

I've been involved in both competitive clubs where the goal
is winning and making nat'l teams, as well as community access
clubs where the primary goal was to provide rowing and
paddling access to the broader community. Both are valid
and can be very successful.

Well, first and foremost, the babes should be totally hot and sexy. I
mean if they're just average, then no one's even going to pay cover,
let alone stay around for drink........oh you meant *ROWING* clubs...
heheh.... >ahem< RIGHT. wrong newsgroup, sorry.
