Four girls on the crew team at Edwin O. Smith High School in Storrs were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a Sea-Doo watercraft crashed into their 56-foot rowing shell on Coventry Lake.

Environmental conservation police were called about 3:15 p.m. and the girls were taken by ambulance to Windham Hospital, according to a spokeswoman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which has jurisdiction on lakes.

The girls' injuries were not life threatening, according to DEEP.

The owner and operator of the 14-foot Sea-Doo -- whose name was not released Sunday night -- was not hurt and is cooperating with police.

The crash is under investigation by the DEEP boat accident reconstruction unit. Environmental police were assisted by Coventry police, fire departments from North Coventry and South Coventry, as well as emergency medical units from several towns.

From Rowing Illustrated Boards: "Boater was texting and driving. Kids are largely okay - broken foot and potential concussion. Apparently the kids follow the proper response to a T. They are fortunate it was a jet-propelled boat, no prop."

Saw that point has been added by a poster to the Courant. It beggars
belief. I'm sure he is "cooperating" with police.

Incidentally, a problem with many if not all jet-skis, AKA 'personal
watercraft', is that they only steer when under power. This can be
unfortunate since human instinct is to cut the power and try to steer
away from a collision.
