Best ever performance by a school at the HORR

It'll be interesting to see how well Eton perform at the Head of the
River this year. They could produce the best result by a schoolboy
crew. It got me thinking.....what is the current best result by a
school? I'm thinking the Hampton 8 of 86-87 finished quite high up but
I can't remember exactly where. has any school broken into the top 10?

Emanuel School, 1966 or 67, but I don't have the relevant almanacks to
provide chapter & verse. I think they managed around 5th, and I'd be
interested to hear where their second eight finished.

A fellow OE had the answers:
First eight finished 6th in 1966 in 18:54. The second eight was 42nd
in 19:41.

That's impressive. I'm rowing with a guy who finished 11th in 73 or
74 (Eton), which I thought was pretty good too.

From a trawl through the post-war Almanacks, it seems that there have
been 6 instances where a school has finished in the top 10:
1950 St Paul's 10th
1951 St Paul's 8th
1966 Emanuel 6th
1967 Emanuel 7th & Radley 10th
1968 Radley 10th

Eton came 11th in both 1973 and 1974.

Bear in mind that in 1950 & 1951 there were only just over 200 crews
in the race.

Well 17:22 with a fairly breezy north north-easterly and only a modest tide
seems pretty fast

Pretty good, but I think the most impressive performance of the day
was Hampton's J15 winning their division by 40 seconds and only being
beaten by 1 J16 (who also happened to be Hampton). One to watch for
the PE in 2012!
