I'm looking to make the switch from old velcro over wooden bases to shoes.
They will be immersed in salt water frequently from waves washing over the
shell. Have you used these shoes or can you recommend another supplier?

Thanks,

Mike

I have purchased a couple of pairs of shoes from Don Ukrainec, who is
H2Row. Don is a very fine man and has good shoes. in my experience the salt
water doesn't damage the shoes if you rinse them off well before you put
your shell away.

My first pair of shoes wore out just below the rubber reinforcing ribbon
around the toes. This is because the shoes were too big and my toes
couldn't reach the ribbon.

Just click on the photo to enlarge it. Should work ...

Hope this helps,

Charles

Thanks! Everything gets rinsed after coming out of the bay. BTW, those shoes
in your picture appear to be attached to a work of art...

I bought boxes of these shoes for Vancouver Rowing Club when I was equipment manager there several years ago, largely because they seemed incredible value for money, especially at US prices. They worked well for our boats as replacements for original equipment manufacturer - supplied shoes and to the best of my knowledge are still in use 6-7 years later (although I would guess are probably getting close to replacement in the heavier-used vessels). This was on a fleet of boats which row almost exclusively on salt water. They're not as fancy perhaps as some of the more august sporting-goods labels who now sell rowing footgear, but seemed to be honest, hardwearing kit for the money.

In some cases, they were the supplied-OEM shoes - I'm almost certain that my 2006 Fluidesign 1x had FD-labelled H2Row shoes which were absolutely fine during the 5 years I had my boat.

Mike,

I just uploaded a pdf file on how to attach heel restraints to H2Row shoes.

The text comes from Carl. The photographs and shoes are mine.

I forgot to mention that this method of fastening heel restraints is
surprisingly easy. The hardest part for me was the Thumb Knot. But that is
another story, which I do not have time at the moment to tell …

Also I might add that if Carl lived in California and worked for Apple
Computer, he most certainly would have patented his method of tying heel
restraints. Why care about the lives of others when there is money to be
made?

We fit H2Row as our standard shoe s& supply them as spares because (in
no particular order): they're a comfortable fit, shaped for normal, not
runners', feet; they're well-made; they're durable (even in salty
waters); the screw threads are accurately (and repeatably) positioned;
Don gives an excellent service.

What more would you want in a rowing shoe? They may not be the very
height of fashion, but they work far better than those may be seen as such.

Cheers -
Carl

Thanks to all. I called Don at lunchtime Friday, got great advice and the
shoes were shipped that afternoon. I recently repaired what had been a
vexing leak in my Maas 24, an almost invisible crack along the gunwhale that
would apparently flex and take on water. I finally figured it out and now
the boat is bone dry after a row even in heavy chop. Now to work on my
technique....

this link is too unspecific, it opens my own Google Drive for me. Can
you share the document with me? You'll find me on G+, so sharing should
be easy.

I sent you an email with the pdf file in question. As I said in the email,
edit it any way you want and use it as you think think best.

I have also added you to my Google+ circle of friends ...

When I get time I will figure out what went wrong with the link on Google+.
I originally uploaded it to Google Docs, but was informed that even as it
was uploading Google Docs was changing to Google Drive. Google appears to
be in a process of snowballing. Is it getting ready to take over the world?

Henning -

I put you in my Friends Circle on Google+. Theoretically this should give
you access to the Document. Can I ask you a favor? Will you let me know if
it doesn't.

Also, on Google Drive you apparently can make a document public -- i.e.
anyone with access to the internet can view it, edit it, and download it.
But so far I have had no luck. Do you, or anyone else for that matter, know
how to do this?

I must confess that I am beginning to wonder if a lot of this stuff is
ready for prime time ...

Cordially,

Charles

I did this:
Go to my Google Drive website. Tick the box next to the file that I want
to share. Then a new menu button appears on top of the screen saying
something like 'more'.
Click there, it opens a menu with something like 'share...' in it. Click
the submenu.
Then a list appears: "Who has access".
The first entry defines visibility, click the 'edit/change' link and it
asks you who shall be able to see it. Public /w access through search,
public for link owners only, ...

I have a german interface, you words may vary.

Here's a sample document:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5w6Bhbnk3h2aGE0djF2SG55WFU

What's really cool is to share a Text document for editing with others.
Each user gets his own coloured cursor and all can work on the same
document at the same time, seeing the immediate changes of all other
editors in real-time.

Henning,

All of the above has been done. See if this works:

Henning,

Because Sandy does not have a Google Drive account I used her computer to
test the link.

Everything seems to work as advertised — I can go to the file without
having to log in or set up a Google Drive account. I can also print the
file, or download it, or even revise it. Pretty cool stuff!

Thanks for your patience and help,

Charles

Mike,

You should thank Carl, not me. It is his idea, his engineering and his
writing. All I did was supply the four photographs.

Charles

Glad to help.

Google may harvest lots of user data. But compared to others, they put
real effort in. So it's a joy to use these services.
I sometimes wonder about people who resist to use Google Location
Services. Google probably already knows even without signing up for the
service. And if they wanted to, they wouldn't need to ask. At least your
mobile ISP knows. So why not use the data as well for myself?

So, just keep in mind that everything that goes into the cloud has a
certain chance to leak somewhere you don't want it to go. If it's a
document about proper heel restraints, please leak!
