Thanks

Nick,
Richard Packer has a nice little converter..

Hi Nick,
I've enjoyed your posts over the last few years. We all need to keep
a sense of humour over what is, after all, rowboat racing :)
The USRA uses a common handicap for all masters classes which seems to
work pretty well.
Handicap/1000 m = (age - 27)^2 * K
where K = 0.020 for 8+'s and 4x's
0.0216 for 2x and 4's
0.025 for 1x's and 2-'s
Cheers,
Bob
Only covering events raced under (UK) ARA rules though.
Richard
See <http://www.rowingnsw.asn.au/handbook/masters.html> for one version.
There is also probably a table in the archived meeting minutes at Rowing
Australia.
Cheers,
Randal
Thanks Bob, much appreciated. However, not everyone has been so much in
favour of my idea of all the time.
And for Richard's benefit, our regatta will not be run under UK ARA rules,
which as I understand are that all facts must be denied and all evidence
refuted, especially anything relating to Archimedes. So if issues of
buoyancy and flotation are not their forte, those guys really should be put
in charge of the Henley on Todd regatta at Alice Springs, so recently
mentioned in another thread, where the only thing that gets wet is the
inside of the drinkers' necks.
No, we will be using ANA Rules, by which I mean "local rules" which will
essentially follow FISA rules, but in my role as Regatta Co-ordinator and
Lord High Everything Else I am prepared to interpret these as fairly as
possible for the benefit and enjoyment of all rather than be an officious
panjandrum. Our main goal is for a group of oldies, a number of whom have
little or no past regatta experience, to have a grand day out on the
beautiful Swan River. If we're lucky the handicaps where needed will
generate some close finishes, and a fair few folk will end up taking home
some nice silverware.
Anyone in WA reading this, be sure to come along on Sat 12th, and there's
still time to put in entries. Offically these close on Sunday, but on this
one, I'm doing the draw, so I'll stretch dealines wherever make the rules up
as I go along.
Nick
So a crew with average age of 50 has a 5 second handicap over an average age
crew of 45 on a 1000m course. But a 10 second advantage over a 2000m
course.
And, in the Head of the Elk on Elk Lake, which (as you know, Nick) is an 8km
course, that 45 year old crew would have a 40 second advantage. But only a
25 second advantage in the Head of the Gorge.
Apparently this formula isn't based on anything scientific ... just on what
people thought was fair at the time it was developed.
Does it work? Well, that depends whether you're the winning crew or the
losing crew ...

who rowed both the Head of the Elk and Head of the Gorge with Nick in a 2x.
Condolences appreciated.

"Aussie Rules"- now wouldn't that be a way to run a regatta! Would probably
have to be a bumps race though...

Try http://www.vierzonder.nl/correctlftenboot.html
You will find tables for age handicap (Fisa agegroups) used in the
Netherlands
for this purpose.
The site www.vierzonder.nl has more information with tables for boat factors
and weight adjustments for ergometers.
Most of the site is in both Dutch and English.
