Thanks for asking about one of the best places in which to row in
Canada. The Montreal Rowing club rows out of the Olympic Rowing Basin
on Ile Notre Dame which is only a 10 minute drive from downtown or a 20
min bike ride and is also accessible by metro (subway). You can reach
our manager at (514) 861-8959.
Or you can email me, Matt Cendamo, Past president, (that's why I'm
biased) at nto...@autoroute.net

The Olympic Basin is a nice place to race, but far from the best place
in Canada to row. I'd rather commit suicide than row round and round in
a bath tub to get a 20km outing.

About 200kms away is the Ottawa Rowing Club. Row to your hearts content!

Having rowed at the Montreal Rowing Club for a season, I would much
rather have to turn on the basin every 2K in calm water than row through
some of the swells that I have seen at the Ottawa Rowing Club. Breaking
the workout up into 2K pieces is not that bad considering it only takes
thirty seconds to turn your boat around!

Sorry Matthew, I have rowed at the basin & find it a wonderful facility
that is vastly underexploited and fantastic for something within sight
of Montreal

But

Rowing in circles in a grey concrete basin lends to boredom
approximating (but not even close to) what one experiences doing long
pieces on an erg. I was out last weekend on the Ontanabee (spelling?)
river in Peterborough and that was beautiful: nice scenery, mostly calm
water, narrow canals, fresh air and..... major km of rowing before one
had to turn around.

It is hard to beat the basin for a regatta & a fair race... but it
definately isn't the most interesting place to row.

Good rowin'

It may not be the most interesting place in the world but in early
April, we don't have to worry about ice flows and spring run-off making
it rather dangerous to go out in a single!

By the way, Good to see you're doing well Matt Miller
