I would love to hear of rowing opportunities for post-collegiate
women in the New York City area or around Yale University. I am graduating
at the end of the academic year, and would like to keep up sculling or
sweep rowing. Are there any clubs that rent boats, or would exchange help
on the dock for time on the water?
Thanks!

Jane:

One of the finest places to row in all the country is the New York Athletic Club. They are a competitive group of scullers and sweep rowers. The team is made up of college students, recent grads, and professionals.

The Rowing course is located 15 miles north of Manhattan on Orchard Beach Lagoon in Pelham NY. The race course is 2,100 meters, surrounded by trees and park.
In 1964 the city of New York built starting docks, and a finish tower in order to hold the Olympic trials. Most of the time the team trains on the protected waters in the lagoon, many mornings they leave the harbor and can row for miles out to sea on the Long Island sound, wich can be glass flat till about 8 am.

The Head coach there is Ted Bonnano. I don't know his phone number, but hes the man to speek with about trying out for the team.

More NYC area clubs:

Empire State Rowing
Areil Boat Club queens
New Rochelle Rowing Club
Sound View Scullers ??? new rochelle
Oyster Bay RC long island

Saugatuck Rowing Ct
Norwalk RC Ct

I'm sure that there are many more clubs in addition that I have not mentioned.
Many folks have small Alden Ocean Shell clubs that they run out of their back yards on the long island sound.

If you are having trouble looking up any of these clubs, send me some e-mail and I could help you look them up.

- Keep on Rowing

Jim

Sorry Travis,

That's where I learned to row and I still have very great memories
about training there. I mentioned that it is one of the finest
places to row. Nice water and scenery, but it is also one of the
most expensive places in the country to live, and it is not
the easiest commute from NYC.

That is why I am now in PHilil With living expenses 1/2 of what I
would be paying in NYC and Boathouse row within walking distace
from Center City rowing is more convienent here. Fairmount park
is also a beutiful place to be rowing.
