Has anybody heard this tape, as described in "The Amateurs" and "Assault on
Lake Casitas"? It was used as a motivational tape by Brad Lewis. This is the
only Google reference I found so far:

I think I used to have a copy. Well, I know I used to have a copy of a
motivational tape by Mike Livingston. I don't know if it's that
particular one, but being that I rowed at Brad Lewis' alma mater, and he
was "around" when I was a freshman (which is when I got the tape) I
suppose it's very likely that that was indeed the tape.

It starts out with the words (Livingston has a very deep/low voice) "The
big eight is on the paddle..." and goes from there describing a warm-up
and a race, IIRC. I have no idea what happened to my copy, and I'm
pretty sure most have lost track of their copies as well.

Sully, do you or did you ever have a copy of this? Maybe Jed still has
his...

We (UC Irvine rowing) are having a reunion soon, I'll ask around.

Uh, no. Never quite got my head around the 'motivational tape'
thing for rowing.

It's something you need for cold call sales, though.

sounds like it'd be worth re-publishing.... i'm happy to host it if a
copy can be digitized.

Livingston had a great (but short) run at Cal. He was brilliant but a
bit "out there" with quite different ideas about motivation,
spirituality, and interesting foods for healthy rowing. He was
perfect for the image of Berkeley, if not Cal rowing itself, and he
did have results that no-one can deny.

But I agree that things like this are often a huge distraction. They
focus the team on your wierdness and not on the rower fixing his
rowing as the answer to his rowing's problems. Moreover, they only
work for a few people, and even then they can be so out of the
mainstream that they wear off and hurt the coach's magnetism, turning
it from attraction to repulsion.

Miso soup - breakfast of champions...

A mutual coaching friend of ours stopped drinking a few years ago.
He told me he didn't miss it at all except on regatta mornings.

IIRC, you both are hitting pretty close to what that tape was like. Jed
said, "The "psychedelic/new age" vibe felt a little dated and cheesy"
and I agree with him entirely. Although that was 1991, maybe now it's
cheesiness would be cool again. Some of our good friends loved it, I
hardly ever listened to it, which is why I probably lost track of it.

I remember much more vividly a tape Duvall gave us, called "I'll keep
the worms warm" which was about the lengths a coach would/could/should
go to for his athletes, with a funny joke as its centerpiece.

I recall that Ernst didn't often go to lengths to be inspirational
with speeches, etc. He talked about the facts of the race and
reviewed plans with us. What he was good at was breaking the tension
by cracking jokes. I think he believed and was right in that being
psyched up was the athlete's responsibility and best taken care of by
having confidence in one's preparation.

Ok you guys, as long as you are on this subject I can't resist. The
following is a passage from "Assault on Lake Casitas."

"I eventually attended U. C. Irvine, gaining entrance through an athletic
deferment, which was made possible because of my high school rowing. While
at Irvine I continued to sweep row but with marginal success. The team had
one good season-1974. Coach Bob Ernest and varsity stroke Bruce Ibbetson,
both future Olympians, led the team to a dozen victories. Unfortunately, I
was not on the varsity during those halcyon days, toiling instead on the
lowly juior varsity. Soon after the '74 season, Bob Ernest left U. C. Irvine
to coach at a better rowing school, the University of Washington, and the
Irvine program quickly sank into mediocrity."

What do you think? Is Brad Lewis giving a fair assessment? Was 1974 the
height of UCI's sucess in rowing?

Some time over a beer. Right now I'm laughing too hard.

Just make a note to yourself.

And someone clean up after JD!

Yeah. Brad summarized a little too much there, if you ask me (which you
did.) :^)

What I know of those days was mostly told to me by the likes of Sully
and JD, so far be it from me to comment on their era if they don't want
to themselves.

Mike coached UCI after he was a rower there, and I think they had some
good seasons. UCI produced at least one other Olympian from Mike's
coaching days. I don't know if Mike's crews (the ones he coached) were
competitive with the likes of UW & Cal, but the years I was there we
were not. However, the top four from our eight were competitive with
Cal & UW, and we beat them more than once in head races.

I guess I wasn't clear. Duvall gave us this tape because it was funny.
It also illustrated, sort of, the style you just described of Ernst.
No amount of motivational speaking can really change the outcome of a
game. In the end, it's the preparation that matters, and the athletes'
confidence in that.

The tape DYH gave us was a recording of a talk/speech that Baylor
football coach Grant Teaff gave several years post-retirement. His
telling of the central joke was really funny. Here is an article which
gives the gist of the tape, but isn't as funny:

Absolutely hilarious to see the same folks decrying motivational
speeches that fell head over heels for exactly that. So are you
mentally weak, or mentally weak?

Keep it up guys! You're not the only ones laughing.
