Cal-Washington Dual: The No.1-ranked Cal men's varsity eight travels to
Seattle, WA to take on the No. 3-ranked Washington Huskies, Saturday, April
24, in dual race competition on the Montlake Cut. A full schedule of racing
including men's and women's varsity, JV, freshman and varsity coxed four
kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with the men's varsity final to be contested at 9:55
a.m.
Schoch Cup History: The men's varsity racing series for the Schoch Cup
dates back to 1903 and is the second longest rivalry in intercollegiate
athletic history. Washington leads the series with Cal, 63-24-1, with Bears
last victory in the dual coming in 1992. In last year's race at Redwood
Shores, after taking a slight advantage in the early going, then No.
2-ranked Cal suffered breakage and was unable to complete the course, while
the top-ranked Huskies cruised to victory.
Head-to-Head in '99: Cal and Washington crossed paths in the varsity, JV,
and freshman events at the San Diego Crew Classic, March 27-28. The Bears
varsity eight broke a string of four consecutive Husky Crew Classic
victories to claim the Copley Cup. Washington finished second, 9.5 seconds
behind the Bears, but well ahead of No. 4-ranked Yale and No. 6 Penn. Cal's
JV eight won it's event by 4 seconds over the Huskies, but the freshman eight
suffered a setback by the same margin to the UW frosh. After the dual, the
two programs will see each other a third time at the Pac- 10 Championships
in Sacramento, May 16, and again at the IRA national championship in Camden,
NJ, May 27-29.
Cal Varsity No. 1 in the Polls: USRowing will be conducting biweekly
national collegiate coaches polls for men and women's varsity eights during
the 1999 collegiate racing season. In both regular season polls of the year
Cal was ranked No. 1. Below is the current Top 10. The Independent Rowing
News will also be publishing a biweekly Collegiate Rowing Ranking.

Cal State Collegiate Championships Recap: The Cal men's freshman eight won
the varsity eight event at the California State Collegiate Rowing
Championships on Lake Natoma, April 17. After posting the fastest time in
the qualifying heats in the morning racing session, the Bears had a strong
performance in the grand final defeating the second-place Stanford varsity
eight by six seconds. Other varsity eights to fall to the Cal frosh in the
grand final included Sacramento State, UC Davis, UCSB along with the Orange
Coast College JV crew.
About Head Coach Steve Gladstone: Regarded as one of the premier coaches in
the United States, Steve Gladstone is in his third year in his second stint
as head coach of the Golden Bears. Gladstone, who also coached at Cal from
1972- 80, guided the Bears to their best season in a decade in 1998,
sweeping the men's eight events at the Pac-10s before culminating in a
second-consecutive third-place finish by the varsity eight at the
Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) national championships. During his
previous tenure at Cal from 1972-80, Gladstone led the Bears to three
undefeated dual race seasons, an IRA title and a Pac-10 championship.
Gladstone served as the Director of Rowing Operations at Brown University
from 1981-94. During his time at Brown, Gladstone's crews amassed four
Eastern Sprints championships, five IRA championships and two National
Collegiate Rowing championship titles.
