Hi All,
having recently swapped from sweep to sculling I find that under
pressure I tend to pull to one side - ie my scull goes towards
strokeside and I have to re correct every few strokes.
I realise its probably due to a strength imbalance but is there any
quick pointers or methods to minimise this?
I know a winter of training in the scull will even me up just that I
need a quick fix for a race thats coming up
Thanks,
Ronan

I'm sort of curious about this. I've heard others make the same comment, but I
wouldn't think it was a strength imbalance as much as a reach imbalance. I
know when I row a double with my daughter who just finished 8 years rowing port
that the boat is often down to port, but it still goes reasonably straight.
Maybe the best way to correct this would be to make an attempt to reach out a
bit more on port at the catch?

Hi,

I agree. I have a few years of experience in coaching unexperienced
scullers. I've seen this a lot and many times your problem was caused by a
different stroke length on two sides.

The effect is on the catch as well as the finish, I think. Towards the
catch, usually one of the blades is closer to the water. Assure that you
adjust the level in which your hands move forward. At the finish, assure
that your hands are (almost) at the same height. Usually people drop their
right hand to much, so this already pulls the blade slightly out of the
water, which makes it less powerful.
