Hello,

The club I belong to starts us out sweeping in an 8 because we don't have enough singles for all the new members. After months of sweep rowing which I like a lot I just started sculling in our Maas Aero's. I want to get my own so I can go out whenever I want to. Where I row would be considered open water and we have a lot of flat water in the morning but can get a bit choppy at times. I'm considering a Maas 24 or the Bay 21 by http://www.bayshellsrowing.com/Default.aspx
The Bay 21 seems like a well made boat. The shell is made at the Pocock plant and it's finished at the Bay Shells facility. So I wanted to know if anyone else has any knowledge of the Bay 21 and what there thoughts are.

Thanks for your time

Mike

that you have consistent flat water in the morning, why not a Maas 27 or similar single? Not sure what you mean by "choppy", here at the Redwood City club it gets windy every afternoon and water gets bouncy/choppy with some protected areas. The club culture is to not take singles out on those times, but I consider it very rowable in singles, indeed talked a long time masters member to go out in afternoons to seek out the rough water.

OTOH, at the lake I have club at, the same sort of wind coming onshore would make it unrowable for a single because of the fetch.

No opinion on Bay 21 vs Maas 24, I think the Maas boat is a fine boat, and boats I've tried that are shaped like Bay 21 are fine too.

They are both nice boats. I think I would pick a Maas 24 over a Bay 21 because I think it is a faster boat. Whatever boat you get, get a self bailer, which I think are standard on the Bay 21 and Maas 24, but not on the Maas 27.

It's a bit scaldy of them to charge a bowball as an extra

Depending on your situation, one of the benefits of the Bay 21 is that it fits in most standard garages for off-season extended storage...I was advised by what I consider a knowledgeable soul, that either/both are excellent choices for open water/recreational rowing.

Maas also makes the Aero which is also 21' so should fit in a standard Garage. (get the wing Aero rather than the classic) Echo and Pinert both on the east coast also make similar boats. The Echo riggers can be folded back for easy storage and transportation--a college rowing buddy of mine just bought the company. I've heard very good things about the Pinert Zephyr.
