My daughter's novice crew season was cut short by a knee problem. Her
college's health center sent her to an orthopedic surgeon, who said that
the pain and swelling in her knee were caused by the kneecap's not tracking
properly, which was in turn caused by some problem with the way her hip
joint is formed. She was on crutches for a while and the knee is still
somewhat painful. She will be home for Christmas and most of January and
I want to get this injury taken care of. (It has bothered her before,
during high-school crew and swimming, although not to this degree.)

Any recommendations for doctors in the Puget Sound area? She'd prefer one
who doesn't immediately tell her to quit rowing! Her coach is willing to
adjust the foot stretchers, etc., but, until we can get the knee back to
normal, she can't row competitively.

I'd be very grateful for any recommendations--I know how *I*'d feel if I
were off the water! Please e-mail (km...@eskimo.com) or phone
(206/337-6614) me with any names or suggestions.

Thanks.

I'm writing on behalf of all of the people with knee problems on the Uof
W women novice crew, and there are a lot of us! Our trainer treats us
with knee taping, lots of ice, strengthening exercises for the knees and
we don't run and do limited leg weights. I've heard that some doctors
think that surgery can can be used to change peoples Q angles. Good
Luck!

I'm writing to you on behalf of myself and my teamates. A lot of us
here in the University of Washington Womens Novice crew program have the
same problem. We get taped up before practices, don't run, do limited
leg weights and ice forever. I have heard that some doctors think of
doing surgery to change the persons Q angle and my sister had her foot
stretchers reconstructed in her single to help the problem but other
than that I don't think there is a lot that can be done. You have to be
smart and realize, along with your coach, that it would hurt more than
help to run stadiums and leg squats. Don't worry there is hope, one of
the knee cripples pulled 7:01/2000m yesterday! Good Luck.
