Hello all, couple of questions...

Rigging numbers for a coastal quad, anyone?
I've got two Eurodiffusions Yole 35 quads, rigged like a doggies
breakfast, and guess who has to fix it. I would gladly accept any
suitable advice for a starting point for the rigging. Span, oar length
and inboard.

FISA design specs for coastal boats.
Does anyone know where to find the specifications governing what is
acceptable to use in a FISA coastal race?

What the heck business is it of FISA to start regulating equipment for
coastal rowing? Coastal craft have evolved locally to suit local
conditions & traditions, & a boat which suits all conditions may well
end up suiting none.

I asked this at the FISA/Boatbuilders meeting & got no clear answer.
And as luck would have it I've just been discussing it with a Channel
Islands builder. Well, we did get a huge number of chuckles out of our
discussions while concluding that regulations like this are the way
under-employed apparatchiks fill their time.

Cheers -
Carl

Hi Jonny,

Oddly the rules seem to have disappeared from the FISA site. I have a
PDF copy of them from 2003 and I doubt they've changed much, I'm happy
to email you a copy if you wish but for the latest up to date set
write to FISA at:

For the 4x the rules used to be, Max length 10.70m, Min width 1.30m
and a min weight of 150kg, yes one hundred and fifty kg.
Basically there are no other rules for the boats than that. I'd set
them up with a standard sculling rig, maybe a little lighter than
usual and a little more height on the swivels to allow for the waves.

Roger,

I could not agree more. Here is a quotation from the Maas Manual: “It is
easier to scull with the locks too high in flat water than to scull with the
locks too low in rough water.”

Cordially,

Charles
