For those who have not read the tragic news on other rowing sites.

Carl Smith, one of the Worlds great lightweight oarsmen, was killed in
a road traffic accident over the new year.

Tributes are already being posted on some of the other rowing web
sites and I felt that it would be appropriate if there was slot posted
on this site for such tributes.

I am sure that I speak for many of the Non NCRA lightweights in
expressing dismay at the sad news. Our thoughts go out to his family
at this time.

Richard -

That's terrible. I am deeply saddened by this awful news & can only
echo the sentiments you express.

Never will forget the rerow against Harvard at Henley in 1989 in the
plate a totally dominant performance of lightweight rowing, twice ! A
master of both scull and blade. Not many of those about.

It was his double with my old school teacher Alan Whitwell that got me
into this bewitching sport.

I believe he died behind the wheel of his TVR and whilst very early to
loose a life at least he was doing something he was enjoying.

Good guy and thoughts as always to those who he leaves behind, friends
and family.

Everyones thoughts echoed. Again I didnt know him though did turn up
to lwt trials for many years and watched him utterly dominate. Also
saw some of the epic races.

Tragic for his family and friends and a great loss to the sport.
