I am a very agressive person so I have found that on longer pieces on the
erg I need something smooth and mellow. I have found that Stevie R. Vaugnn
or John Lee Hooker work well for all you blues fans. But for sprints and
short pieces nothing beats some Rage Against The Machine blasting in your
ears, or mabey for the less extreme people try some Sugar Ray or Real Big
Fish. If your under the impression that the song on the radio by Sugar Ray
is what the band is like you better take a listen to the CD before you buy
it. They are pretty intense. Just some advice to help you get through life
on the erg.

nothing beats Meatloaf's "Bat Out Of Hell" to get you throught a 2k erg

I prefer something with more BPM like Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy.

I hardly ever use music whilst erging.

To make erg-life bearable I make sure I don't turn
every training into a max-test. If I plan to do
an 80 minutes at 70% I try to keep my heartrate around
150 bpm and not sprint it off at the end (even though
tempting at times) and if it's 3x10 minutes 90% then
I try to pull the same distance three times (or a little
bit further each piece). If I'd pull 3000+ metres in the
first 10 minutes and then couldn't do that the second and
third time I'd not have done a good workout.

All this makes erging more fun for me, because I can
measure progress against previous trainings, whereas if I
try to go maximal each time I get much more variation
in my scores due to changes in 'form of the day`.

Another way to make erging less cumbersome is to put a
folded towel on the erg seat and set up mirrors so you
can watch your technique now and then. Even more fun was
the time when I erged in front of a video camera (filming
from the side) with the live picture on a TV screen in
front of me - very confronting!

well, it seems different people like different music, making it hard to
isolate a "best" erg music--it may depend a lot on how people feel about
the vile machine itself...
SO, for people (like me) who have a tremendous aversion to the erg, i find
that longer pieces are all about zoning out, in order to forget what you're
doing/suffering. no better musical accompaniment for this than some
trance/ambient techno, like orbital or robert miles. just watch the drool
and remember to blink.
in order to get shorter pieces done as quickly as possible, i prefer help
from our berserk 80's punk friends, *especially* the misfits. "spinal
remains" gets my vote for most aggressive song ever. holy schnikes!

Since everyone is giving different examples of music that is supposed to
help them out with erg pieces, why don't each of you also list the erg
score that you received with that piece of music?

6000m erg piece with Ministry's "The Mind is a terrible Thing to taste"
album playing: 20:something or another (it wasn't good)

With nothing playing: 19:43 (give or take a second, I can't remember).

Since it doesn't help me rowing the 6k's, doesn't necessarily mean that
it doesn't help somone out there. I find that if it's good for
anything, it's good for doing longer pieces, or intervals. My music
preference for those would be some Tribal House, or for the longer ones,
Jungle (or drum and base as it's also known as).

I'll accept tha challenge; I've set up a quick mailto: form on
row2k.com (under the Sept. 11 list at http://www.row2k.com) for now) to
begin collectinyour favorite erg music; when i have a spare minute,
I'll set up a form for easier inputting.
send your favorite erg music to ergm...@row2k.com
and include the following:
length and type of piece
your age
competitive level (ie., HS, college, club, masters, recreational, etc.,
not how fast you go)
whether you object to use of your name in the final results.

please include nly music you have actually used to get through long
ergs.

I'd also like to compile the definitergometer mixed tpae; send your
favorite mixes to the same address. if possible, i'll actually compile
the best of the lot and make them available.

It depends how hard you want to row or if you want to rate high etc., a
few tips:

(i) The Billy Joel song "Pressure" might be the right song for you if
you want to completely stuff yourself.

(ii) Whilst after erging to a Rob Orbison song, you'd probably feel like
you've done nothing.

(ii) A Jason Donovan & Kylie Minogue duet will probably see you have a
"Ralph" at the 1000 metre mark or before! (TRANSLATION for the yanks -
vomit)

(iv) "Candle in the Wind" might result in you breaking down in tears
midway through an erg.

(v) And for those really long ergs "American Pie" is the song for you,
because the song just goes on and on!!

(vi) Any song by the "Beachboys" would see you immediately stop erging,
after realising there are better things to do, and go out and enjoy the
outside air and/or beach.

And remember, "the only important things are Rythmn...... and
Melody...."
- What's the name of the song with these words in it?

I reckon anything that's sheer brainless beat will do - a techno/house dance
mix works fine for me. With a few 'Eye of The Tigers' to get you going.

One thing I noticed: 'Mission Impossible' lowers my splits by 2 seconds (though
I feel knackered when it's over)

And does anyone know the song with the words:

"... I can row my way up to the start line
I can be strong......"

Our cox heard it, but doesn't know the title or anything..

Surely it must be Big Audio Dynamite II: "Rush"

And anyone seeking nostalgia with a 2500m erg could use Ministry: "Jesus
Build My Hotrod" ---8:13 flat, one song does it all, plug and play...
become the hotrod....

Clinical studies show that music that gets you really pumped (i.e.
rage, metallica, offspring) actually decreases ones performance when doing
activities such as erging. I think this doesn't always apply, such as on
short pieces, but longer pieces I would suggest a different approach.
Start off with some rhythm music that gets you psyched, like the Rocky
soundtrack or something, then when you get towards the end of the piece
have the music switch to something like Rage or Metallica. That can help
pull you through the end of a 6k.

For long steady-state pieces, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Lead Zeplin,
ect. For the 2k/6k erg tests, who cares? After about 500 meters, the

want is some noise to dampen the

The model Bs were *great* for erg testing. A small room, several ergs, loud
music, lots of noise.

CRASH-Bs were absolutely wonderful with the older ergs; 64 of 'em, all going
at once in the MIT cage.....what a noise. Just hearing it would raise the
heart rate.

That's the one thing I don't like about the model Cs -- too quiet.

obMusic: old sixties tunes for erging: Pretty Woman and the like....
