There has been a group of us rowing here in Boise for a couple of years in
an informal club known as Boise Area Rowing. For the most part we have
privately owned rec single sculls, but also one double. (Maas Aeros and the
like).
We row on a two mile stretch of the Boise River east of town between Lucky Peak
Reservoir and Diversion Dam starting at Discovery Park next to Lucy Peak Rec-
reation Area, but we also row occasionally on other area lakes and reservoirs.
We have gone to races in the Portland, Seattle, and Spokane areas and elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
Diversion Dam controls irrigation water and backs up the Boise River into a
wider slow moving spot in a canyon. It is good for rowing although there are
strong morning winds, and early in the season the water is very cold.
Up until now of the group who row none of us have collegiate rowing
experience.
Recently there have been a number of folks moving to Boise who are either
in college and want to row or who have collegiate rowing experience. In
particular, Eric Fischer who recently moved here from Portland has done
considerable work on setting up a club at Boise State University. While the
group is not officially recognized by the school yet, work is actively being
done in that regard.
We will be having a meeting on Wednesday, May 26 at 8:00 pm to find out
what people's interests are, and to figure out issues on starting a more formal
club. This includes getting boats and equipment. Eric has worked with
connections he has to get a four and an eight but details need to be worked out.
A place to store the boats has yet to be found. There is a person in town who
has some coaching experience and who has offered to help. Many other logistics
have yet to be determined.
The group would be aimed at both college and masters level rowing, and it's
anticipated name would be Boise State University Crew Association (BSUCA).
Anyone who is interested should get in touch, either with Eric Fischer,
(208)385-3638 or Kim Hibbler (208)345-6234, or myself (208)336-4846 or
email e...@boi.hp.com . The meeting will be at Kim's house, call for directions.

Hi. Are you all still rowing? I've been a coxswain for the last three years in San Diego (Hi Kim!!) and just bought a single. I live in Caldwell now near Lake Lowell. I've been out twice there and it's nice, calm and has a large no wake zone. Would like to talk with you and get involved. Donna 858-413-5110

I live in Caldwell as well. I dream of owning my own boat, but would love to get to go out again!

Holy thread resurrection! Twenty-three years must be some kind of record. I didn't realise the internet even existed in 1993.

Hi, my name is Crystal. I moved to calwell from seattle late 2015. I rowed in high school some 15+yrs ago, in double, 2x, 4x, and 8. Was headed to UW team but life happened and college got put on hold.
I have been trolling the internet here since hoping to find a team/club to join. Get back in "rowing" shape and enjoy the water in a way only rowers/surfers know. Plus would love to teach my daughters. I would love to own a shell but am single widowed student, so cant afford. Why are they so expensive lol. And id need at least two or a quad to teach my girls.

If you have found out anything i would really appreciate any info.
Thanks

Hi Crystal -
Life throws us curve-balls, & what makes us truly human is how we handle
its vicissitudes. Sounds like you've had a tough time, but you've come
out on top & fighting.

This link may help you to find a nearby club - or perhaps not:
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=boise+Idaho+rowing+clubs&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=2_vFWuC6NejR8gfSo5K4Bg

It seems that rowing is feasible in your location, but we sometimes have
to make our own opportunities. If the water is accessible but there's
no (usable) club, then boats can be kept elsewhere (at home?) &
car-topped to the water.

Why are boats so expensive? Never ask a rowing shell builder as we all
think they're far too cheap! You want a good product - stiff, durable,
long-lasting, well-designed, well-made & performs well? For that you
have to pay when you buy new. And good designers & builders still must
eat, have somewhere to live, somewhere to work, & have a life too. But
there are always 2nd-hand boats on the market, of all types from
recreational upwards, although in the USA you may have to trek a long
way to check out the nearest affordable shell. But it may be that there
is a decent shell whose only defect is its tatty accessories, which are
of course replaceable.

Keep at it -
Carl

Crystal,

We just recently moved to Caldwell. I lucked out and ran into another rower few weeks ago. She learned to row college and got her father into rowing with an Edon TS515 which has pontoons. They live just 1 mile upstream from our house on the Snake River. I have not purchased my shell and very glad to check out their shells (their other shell is an Alden Star).

I am an US rowing coach. In my club in NY, we taught sculling in both singles and doubles. I think the Edon TS515 is very suitable for teaching and for beginners.

I am hoping to find other local rowers and form an informal rowing group to row on Lake Lowell and the Snake River

Hi! My name's Kate. I'm a collegiate rower in Ohio, but a native of Boise. I've been watching this thread on and off for the last 4 years and I can't believe it came back to life when I wasn't looking! I might be coming home for the summer and would love to see Boise Rowing become a thing (even erging buddies would be awesome).

Some thoughts on bigger boats in the area. Boise High School had a team that was on the water in a +4 around 7 years ago (I had a friend on the team). From what I've heard that team hasn't been active in recent years, but the shell is still around in storage (rumor has it, it belongs to Boise State). I looked into it a couple years ago, but never found anyone to row the boat with so I didn't to try too hard to find it.

Also, I like to stalk row 2k classifieds and found a listing for an older wooden quad in San Luis Obispo, CA. It is free, but needs some maintenance due to being in storage for the last few years. It is supposedly rowable. Not sure if anyone is interested in a project and has a way/desire to go rescue the boat before it is scrapped for parts, but I thought I'd put that out there. It's just close enough to be within road trip distance (and they may be able to bring it up to the SF or Sacramento area). http://www.row2k.com/classifieds/index.cfm?ad=6968

Kate,

We just bought a double, an Alden 18 from SF area and paid over $600 to have it transported to our home in Idaho.

The free wooden quad sounds interesting but not sure whether it is worth a lot more than the transportation cost.

I bought an Edon TS515 from Pocatello, ID last August and have been rowing on the Snake River since then. The winter has been quite mild in our stretch of the Snake River.

I plan to use the double to instruct novice rowers and hope to form an informal rowing club to row on the Snake River and Lake Lowell. I will check with Boise State to see if the 4+ still available.

When the weather gets warmer, you should definitely take a short trip to Sunnyslope, Caldwell and check out rowing here.

Hello, I'm interested in moving to the boise area in about a year. I was a sweep rower in college and recently became interested in sculling. How long is the rowable stretch in the snake river?

I have been sculling on the Snake River only between Homedale and Marsing bridges (around 9 miles) but have seen people kayaking and canoeing in many other parts of the Snake.

There are 2 main limitation factors of rowing on the Snake. First is the current. It is not very fast where I live but the current can be very strong in other parts of the river. Boaters may have to launch upstream and get picked up downstream. Secondly, some parts of the river can be quite shallow in certain of the year and full of hydrilla grass. You can not row too fast until you are familiar with the location.

Sculling on Lake Lowell does not have these limitations. However the lake is part of Deer Flat National Refuge so it is close to boating or with restrictions in some parts of the year (I believe from mid October to early April).

I have investigated rowing locations before moving to Idaho from New York (I rowed for years on the Hudson River). There is another rowable location near Lucky Peak Dam (about 2 miles stretch from Lucky Peak State Park). I believe that the old HS Boise rowing club rowed there.

I row on the Snake River and Lake Lowell in Caldwell. I am rowing a single, Edon TS515 and just bought a double Alden 18.

I don't know if anyone is rowing out of McCall. We checked the area few years ago. Lake Cascade seems rowable but when we were there, the water was very low.

Anyone rowing in Burley on the Snake River? I use a rowboard, which is a paddleboard equipped with a rowing rig. It’s lightweight and I can move it easily by myself. I have a couple friends that would be interested in a single or double, but they’re not easy to come by. I did find one on KSL classifieds but it sold quickly.

Following this thread as I’m also wanting to row outside. Has anyone been on the water between Horseshoe Bend and Emmett? Farewell Bend? Snake River by Walters Ferry? These are some that I’m curious about.
