OUBC Trial Eights brief report

Mortlake over the Boat Race course on an incoming tide.
Conditions: bit of a north-easterly, therefore cross-head from Putney to
Hammersmith and a sweeping tail down Chiswick Ait. Choppy for the first
mile and a half, but not bad overall.
The President's crew won the toss and chose Surrey, with a sort-of-rolling
start, reasonably fair. Advantage went with the corners, no more than 3/4
length lead from either crew at any time, and a tad of clashing..........
Both crews rated pretty high and hard, the eventual verdict going to the
Middlesex crew, about 1/4 length or so, in around 17:48. Umpire was Dan
Topolski, who will presumably stick something in the Evening Standard,
with other press presence covering the Times, Telegraph, Independent,
Guardian and lots of random photographers. Crew lists below.
Since this is the first mention of the season, perhaps I should ask if
anyone abroad (ie those who can't get UK papers) wants me to do my Boat
Race mailing list as I did last year? The idea will be to summarise
general stuff in the press which might not need to be put up here, so that
non-Oxbridge boaties don't get bored. If you do want to be on the list,

The Cambridge Trial VIII's are this coming Friday, at 1:15 pm.
