I've seen the distance posted somewhere maybe in a CII update. I'm not
ready to row for 2-3 hrs straight but I'm wondering what the equivalent
for a running marathon is. That way I'll know what the 1/2 is, which
may be a practicle goal.

Dear philip,

Once a year around october there is a "race" around Lake Geneva
(Switzerland,France).
Its length is -don't get discouraged- about 180 (hundred eigthy) km. It is
rowed mainly in fours. The start is at 9:00 AM, and I believe the fastest
time so far is around 15 H (forgive me if I'm wrong) I remember seeing it
in the guinness book of records a couple of years ago, although it is not
in the recent copies.

Participating takes more than fitness and skill - make sure you are well
prepaired!

Furthermore, I hear often about races in singlesculls, over a distance of
100 km.
Don't be mistaken-this is another discipline.

Good luck and keep training.

I know that when my team (Drake) goes to train in Louisiana over winter and
spring breaks, one day we do a marathon row. We row 13 miles, stop for
lunch, then row back. It takes about 2 hours to do the 13 miles, I believe.
Of course, this is by 8's primarily, so adjust your time accordingly. 2
hours may be manageable for you, I'm a novice, and I don't think it will be
too bad...

There is a race in the UK called te Boston Marathon (which several readers
of this group have done) and it is 30 miles IIRC (and I hope I do!).

31 miles, and one lock to carry your boat past. 3 hours for a good eight in
good conditions.

There is a rowing marathon in Nagadoches (sp) Louisiana every November, I
believe. The distance is the 26 miles and the times for singles range
between 4 and 5 hours.

A more reasonable, but raceable distance is the 12.5 mile around-Wye-island
ragatta for person powered craft which is run by the Annapolis (Maryland, USA)
Rowing Club. A good solid row.

Just row it both ways and you have your marathon, short a few miles!

There is a marathon in Nachitoches Louisianna every year in November that
is 26 miles long without any turn arounds. We did it in a double about 4
years ago and it took 3 hours 27 minutes. This is about the same as
running (at least at my running pace!). I trained mostly on the erg, and
the longest I did was 20,000 m (~1 hour 30 minutes). This was close to a
1/2 marathon (~21,000 m). Typical workouts were 10,000 m or 1 hour pieces
a day. Don't worry, you get used to it after a while! ;-)

The Blackburn Challenge, around Cape Anne, Mass., is 22(?) miles of
openwater rowing. It happens in July and is open to all comers.

I may be repeating something posted previously - If so, so sorry.

There is an open water race around Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound every
August. It is about 34 miles. Some days it is nice and smooth but other days
it can be like the open ocean.

In article <19990111193637...@ng14.aol.com>,
> Montobello marathon in Ottawa. It was such a long race that they have not
raced it in years. UWO still has the trophy (I think). I have never rowed it
and I do not know how long it is but I will try and find out from someone that
raced it.
