Anyone have any experiences with the Fisa 1x by the Durham Boat Company?

Thanks in advance,
Bruce

I just visited their sculling school and picked up one of their
Ultrashells about 4 weeks ago. Any questions, feel free to drop me an
e-mail at beattie...@jpmorgan.com.

They also have a website at www.concentric.net/~Cfuerst

There are a few different models with different materials/weights, but
they are all the same hull design [fisa]. I rowed the lightest weight a
number of times when I rowed there and as a result years later, the club
I belong to owns 4 of them [the heavier model]. The club beats on them
quite a bit and we find them durable. Over the years, during the spring
when unexpected surprises come floating down the swollen river, I ended
up using them for training since I think they have a good feel to them.

I row the lighter weight FISA hull and I'm quite happy with it.
The hull shape was designed (as I understand it) by Klaus Filter,
the East German boat guru, when FISA was considering standarizing
all boats. I find it runs out well (akin to an Empacher, as
opposed to the larger speed fluctuations of a Van Dusen). Hudson
singles are the FISA hull shape modified slightly, and Fillippis are
the FISA hull exactly. (Right, Alex?) Point being, other people
think well of the hull shape and go fast in it.

I also find it to be sturdy and easy to rig / derig. I can see why
a lot of clubs use them.

I had the opportunity to row a Durham Fisa 1x recently and was very impressed.
It was very easy to set up and rowed very smoothly. You can feel the "glide"
as the boat moves very well through the water. I would highly recommend the
boat as an all around rowing shell.
