I've never sculled before but have been interested in the sport. I have the
opportunity to buy a used 1990 Peinert 26 -- would anyone like to share
their opinion of this shell?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Steve,

Our club, the Narragansett Boat Club: www.rownbc.org has quite a few of
them, although they're the older, heavier versions of the "26" (I believe.)
We use them as trainers for the students and some of the people that haven't
passed the racing single test also row them regularly. My self, I think
they're pretty good for a beginner. If you're a beginner, you might want to
consider trying to find a used Peinert Dolphin. This is a fair amount wider
in the waterline beam, which is good for someone just learning the sport.
Even after you have somewhat mastered the sport, the Dolphin is still a nice
boat to row...especially in rougher conditions. Go to www.sculling.com to
have a look at the boat.

Good luck, I think you'll like the sport. I truly wish I was able to start
in high school like some of the young folks I coach!

Cheers and good luck

Peinert 26's are fairly tough and are often selected as club boats.
Accordingly, it would be a good boat to buy if not too beat up. If
you become a serious competitor, you would need to get something
lighter, stiffer, more brittle and more expensive. Also, the boat
comes apart very quickly for storage, and Peinert will adjust (bend)
the arms if you are outside the normal weight range.

As to the Peinert Dolphin, it is an open water racer. It is only 3
years old and there aren't many (if any) used ones for sale. I have
one and love it. My guess is that you would have to wait for an
estate sale to buy one used.

Steve,

I own a 1990 Peinert 26 and have enjoyed the boat up until last year when I
bought a Hudson. It was and still is a great boat. I still own it and row
it on the Erie canal early in the year when there is a lot of debris in the
water. The boat is very stabel, stiff and fast. I raced the boat an often
did quite well. The baot still looks great and has maintained its
stiffness. I have had to replace the wheels and seat tracks, but hat is
normal.

After rowing the Hudson for a couple months I had to return to the Peinert
while my Hudson went in for a repair. I immediately discovered that I was
rwoing short in the Peinert (I am 6'2"). I called Paul at peinert and he
informed that he now bends the riggers forward 1-2" to get more work through
the pin. I did so and now the boat rows more closely to my Hudson. I also
had him knock the rigging up a Half an inch due to my 210# weight. I was
185 when I bought the boat in 90.

If you are 5'6- 5'11 the boat will probably be fine as is. If you are
bigger you can call Paul at Peinert and he bend the rigger for you for free.

PS, Peinert has great cusotmer service and quick response. I may be
interested in selling mine if interested.

Good Luck
Mike
