I am curious to know what movies feature rowing (other
than Oxford Blues) and what movies show gratuitous rowing scenes
but rowing is not part of the plot.

American Rowing Magazine ran an article in the July/Aug '95 issue
regarding rowing in movies (many ideas were generated by this
newsgroup).
Boy in Blue, starring Nicholas Cage, features rowing. Our Varsity
8+ decided to rent it at one of our pre race carbo load parties and,
although it became rather boring, had a good hearty laugh at the
singles race scenes. The most memorable scene involves a spectator
swiming a wrench out to Nicholas Cage during a race when his rigger
comes loose due to tampering. After fixing his rigger Nicolas Cage
procedes to win the race because his opponent has stopped up ahead to
rest and stretch.
Mad Love, although not featuring rowing had the main character as a
rower and put some good screen time in for the sport.
Other movies listed in the article I have not seen excluding once
when flipping channels I came upon Dick Erickson (whom I know) playing
himself as coach of the University of Washington crew yelling them
their daily workout. I wished I knew the name of this movie because I
would like to see the rest of it sometime. If anyone knows please tell
me.

As well at the beginning of the River Meryl Streep she is rowing on the Charles.

In "Mad Love" with Chris O'Donnell and Drew Barrymore, there is about 10
seconds of Chris on an 8, and, later in the movie, he wears a US Rowing
T-Shirt, and, (GASP) takes it off! Check it out! It's a very cool movie.
BTW, Chris O. is a serious rower in real life... anyone have his e-mail
address? : )

If you watch the Bruce Willis flick "Striking Distance" (filmed here in
Pittsburgh) you'll see a sequence where Bruce walks along the river and
waves to a (Pitt) crew. I wasn't around at the time they filmed it, but
I heard the guys in the boat were paid as extras- who says there's no
money in rowing!

I saw a great movie that has rowing as a theme. It is a yugoslav film called
"Hey Babu Reba". It's about a four with coxswain growing up in postwar (WWII)
Yugo. It was made in '85. The rowing itself is nothing to get excited about but
the story is a good one because it is easy to identify with the characters.

Some other movies that have featured rowing in brief shots are "The Dead
Poet's Society", "Dave" (opening credits), and "Exorcist 3". The last
movie actually had two rowing scenes in it. One was the opening scene on
the Potomac with a four rowing along (Washington-Lee High School). The
second is when they first show George C.Scott walking up to the famed
Exorcist Stairs. They show the same team carrying their shell away from
the top of the stairs toward the Georgetown campus. For all of you who
have ever been on these stairs, you know that it is hard enough to run
them without a shell.

I haven't seen this appearance of rowing mentioned yet in this thread,
probably because it's so short, but two scullers can be seen for about 5
seconds in "A Hard Day's Night" just as Ringo begins his walk along the
riverbank to the strains of "This Boy." They reappear at the end of the
segment: one of them has flipped and someone can be heard saying "Come
in number 7, your time is up!" Does anyone know what river this is?

Surely one of the greatest rowing flicks of all time!
A subtle reminder that the coach's megaphone ain't that bad after all.
A lesson in the joys of the sliding seat!
Yes- it's 'BEN HUR'

There's a short bit in the film "Carrington" - it has Steve Waddington
( the Sargeant in Last of the Mohicans ) rowing in an 8 and in the
middle of a firm piece missing a stroke & waving to Johnathon Price
on the shore.

Watch out for the rest of the crew that were in the boat somewhere on
the tideway - they all come from Lensbury Rowing Club ( and I was the
cox in the film !)

Well everyone has their five minutes of fame I guess.

Richard.

PS : Available for film hire again.

The film is True Blue.. features lots pf rowing (understandably)..

Cambridge is played by IC, Oxford is actors for close ups, and doubles
for longer shots/helicopter shots etc.. The rowing scenes are meant to
be good... with new angles like filming a boat race from ahead of the
boats... (unbelievable amounts of wash..)

Film is due out in November...

I don't know if somebody has already mentioned it...
but don't forget Catherine Deneuve watching the fours race in "Indochine"
between the French and Indochinese boys.

There is a quick little part in the new James Bond movie "Goldeneye".
Just before the helicopter is stolen am Quad can be seen moving past the
warship in the background. They look pretty good.

Perhaps it's already been mentioned (I haven't been following this thread
very closely), but there are a few minutes of sculling in part 1 of "Bramwell",
a four-part British TV (Carlton/ITV) series about a woman doctor in London
in 1895. In the US it was shown on "Masterpiece Theater" on Public Broadcasting,
and it's available for purchase there from WGBH TV.
