The following question is based _strictly_ on rumor, as heard from some
members of a novice class, who are new to the rowing community. Please
do not flame me on this one, but I had to ask:

I was told that Temple Women's Crew has filed suit against a coach and/or
the university for Sexual Harassment. Any news?

3 members of Temple Women's Crew filed suit citing sexual harassment by
the members of the Men's crew. According to the story in the Philadelphia
Inquirer (don't know exact date - the 22nd or the 23rd), the erg room was
decorated with sexually explicit pictures and the talk in the erg room
included reviews of the looks of the female rowers as well as crude jokes.
They complained to the school first and were reprimanded by the coach for
not coming to the coaching staff before going to the school. I can't say
for sure if they named the coach in the suit but I think they did.

I don't know what they are asking for in damages. The above is a HIGHLY
condensed version of the story that was in the newspaper. I read it on
the way out the door so it's light on details (apologies). Didn't hear
any stories floating around so I can't tell you how accurate the article
was.

Hope this helps

The truth of the matter is that complaints about abusive LANGUAGE led
to the dismissal of Temple's women's coach before the 95-96 season. At
no time was sexual harrassment at question.

I found a copy of the article in the Daily News on the 'net, which clears
up some of the details:

http://www2.phillynews.com/daily_news/96/May/24/local/ROWW24.htm

But any opinions closer to the source would still be greatly appreciated.

It seems to me that anything a man does nowdays is considered sexual harassment.
How can Dina DelGrande, of Ventnor, N.J., Caroline Smith, of Chalfont, Bucks
County, and Amanda Downend, of Woodstock Street, in the Fairmount section of
Philadelphia be offended by sexually explicit pictures drawn on the wall? These
girls should see my room or, even worse, my roommates' room. I don't have all the
details to this lawsuit, but am scared that coaches are forced to leave due to
this. When women cried out for equality, they didn't want to be treated as
equals. No, they creid out for special treatment, and received special powers.
Remind me not to make any more sexual jokes, which are usually accepted as funny
by both sexes, where I come from, or I'll see my self in jail before I can reach
the conclusion of the joke. I thought America was a free society, where people
were free to speak their mind. Evidence tells me differently.

FUCK YOU dumb bitches!!!

What you needed was to get laid, but I guess nobody wanted to sacrifice his favorite
organ for ugly bitches like you. So now you are suing Temple University?! It is not
their fault that you are so ugly.

And as a matter of fact, the drawings in the toilets made you look prettier than you
are!!!!

I cannot believe that they are firing the coach because of three pathetic looking
sluts!!!

Well the intelligence level has just dropped drastically at FIT as a
result of your intelectually stimulating postings. Seems to me like you
are ruining the name for " all men and all good looking girls" and all
members of the FIT program!

Wow,

It takes a real man to post trash and taunts on a newsgroup without
leaving his name. I think that this is the high tech equivalent of
throwing a rock through the window with a message tied to it. Very
impressive, I didn't know that FIT had dropped their admission standards
so low.

But on a serious note, if you want to complain to somebody about these
women go down to your local truck stop find a bunch of guys who just
crawled out of the woods and knock yourself out. Don't post crap like
this on an international newsgroup. It makes your school look bad, rowing
in the south look bad, and U.S. rowing look bad.

And I thought rowing was a sport for intelligent people... If you
weren't from FIT, I would think you're a 13 yr old guy trying to impress
his friends with his extensive vocabulary... and please, do not include
other people in your anonymous signature. Be a man and sign with your
own name, Mr Zarnetsk. (that is if you're using your own account to
post.)

Feeling threatened by this? Perhaps the women there want to be seen as,
say, athletes and competitors rather than just hunks of flesh? Perhaps,
because the ideals whcih they represent as rowers are much larger than
themselves as mere bodies or individuals, they as female atheletes would
like to be perceived
as more than just objects of lust? Perhaps they felt the coach was doing
nothing to allow them, or the men on the team whom they obviously work
out with, to develop images of themselves which are spiritually and
ethically *integrated* with their bodies? Sure, America's free, but you're
*not* free to disrespect the development of another--complete--person. Some
people *do* get offended, and whether you (or I) like it or not, its
important to make concessions out of mutual respect: and mutual respect is
an essence of rowing. Lose the male ego; it will slow you down.

And, as a coach, I *don't* run my crew as if it were a democracy anyway.

(warning, possibly offensive language follows here)

Actually, I thank the person from FIT who posted that response
because it illustrates perfectly the hostility that exists behind
the so-called sexual humor.

I discussed some of this earlier this year, but since WHEN has
Rowing had some sort of moral high ground in equal rights? I have
no comment on the Temple situation, but when women's rowing started
in the US, there were few if any men's programs or rowers that
offered anything more than a bemused tolerance, and many times a
vicious hostility. I count myself among the early practitioners,
by the way.

The most common form of presenting this hostility has been by
masking it in some sort of 'joke'. Yes, I like a good sex joke
as much as anybody, but have learned there's a time and place for
that behavior. I went into detail some months ago about how SOME
sex jokes or supposedly humorous comments aren't, how there is a
basis of male dominance and a usage AMONG males that do not belong
in certain contexts.

Again, without commenting on the specifics of this case - I know
nothing about it, I do believe that a rowing coach SHOULD lose
his/her job if they allow an atmosphere of hostility that is gender
or race based.

Don't give me 'freedom of speech' and 'PC' dogma. That simplistic
sound bite response has been designed by old men in locker rooms
as some sort of pom pom to wave about when they want the rest of the
world to root for their private little 'dick clubs'.

I challenge the punk who believes he should have the freedom to say
whatever he wants about women's body parts TO women in ANY context
and think he's being funny to walk into his male boss's office and
tell him he's a putz, a dickless wonder, a pussy. Laughingly ask
your boss if it's all right if you can take a ride down his
chocolate speedway. As long as you're laughing, it's no big deal.

Freedom of speech. PC.. PAH!!

Rowing has NEVER been a genteel sport, but there's nothing wrong
with trying.

To All:
For the most part, the members of Florida Tech Crew would like to
apologize for comments made about this subject. The men's and women's
crews support each other totally. We believe that no person should be
made to feel less than "human" by such actions as sexual discrimination.
We would hope that anyone can enjoy being a part of this sport without
such discrimination. Hopefully, with understanding and cooperation this
problem can be solved and prevented.

no, that's where you're wrong. this was the hi-tech equivalent of throwing
a rock through a window with a stupid, immature and ignorant message tied
to it. this is an interesting issue. let's forget this happened and focus
on the real story.

Huh?

How did "rowing in the south" get in the equation? Or is it that
everything wrong is somehow rooted in Southern culture. (Yep, that must
be it).

Actually, the subject of this thread is about an occurance of a
decidedly northern school. And the comments by an FIT rower that has
angered so many is by a rower from a school in a state that, at every
opportunity, loves to point out that it is NOT part of the south.

So be it. Ya'll Yankees--native and transplanted--have it out. We
backwoods types here in the genteel south will just keep on treating the
ladies like ladies, thank you.

Bye, ya'll,

Your right, Flordia is not part of the South, it's just there, and it's a
damn good thing. The only part of Flordia that is the South, is the
Panhandle, which is commonly refered to as L.A. (Lower Alabama).

Of course, this is just my opinion. Most of you might remember how much
Flordia Tech and Georgia Tech love each other! I'm not suprised that a
comment like that one came from an FIT rower. I just remember a comment
from one of their guys at Dad Vails about how glad they were that we
wrecked our trailer and that they wouldn't have to worry about us in the
race....
