I will be studing abroad next fall at the University of Westminster and
would like to continue in competitive rowing while there. Does anyone
know if they have a competitive team and if women's lightweight rowing
exists in England? Also, are they any good?

Jennifer,
I dont know about current London Poly./ Westminster Uni. crews,
*but* Thames Rowing Club, Putney embankment, SW15 is quite a
formidable Club for Womens rowing. Check out the scene with Conor White

The University of Westminster definitely does row, they boat from
Quintin Boat House by Chiswick Bridge. I would be surprised if they
didn't have a competitive team - but I don't know anything about
their womens squad.

Are you kidding?
At international level, virtually unsurpassed over the past few years.
At the domestic level, I not sure how many regattas have specifically
lightweight event - Womens Henley does & Nat Champs. Others ?
Hope this is helpful.

University of Westminster do have a rowing club but the standard is not high and they do not have many boats but if your a novice it might be worth checking out. Otherwise, I would recommend Thames RC, Putney Embankment, London SW15. For women Thames is the strongest club in the country with strength in depth. Lightweight rowing does exist at Thames but it becomes more important when going for squad trials. Domestic rowing for womens lightweights is predominantly restricted to Oxford and Cambridge with exception of the odd big regatta (poss. Women's Henley).
Anyway the guy to get in contact with when you arrive is Nik Wilde and his no. is 0181 677 0717 or phoning from US -44 181 677 0717.
Good luck!

"if women's lightweight rowing exists in England" - what a way to make
friends and influence people! Try looking up recent World medallists...
:-)

"are they any good" - are you? :-)

Now after those little prods - down to business!

The University has a small boat club, but as has been said elsewhere, you
would be far better off going to Thames RC if you are a serious rower,
particularly a serious lightweight (several Nationals based there).
Having said that, a lot will depend where you are living in London - if
you happened to be out near Kingston on Thames there is a good
lightweight girls squad (some Nationals) - if you were further out of
London I'd take you on myself - but Marlow's too far away :-)

Some of the GB women's lightweight squad trains out of Imperial College
(next door to Thames) and in GB we take the lightweight women *very*
seriously - with two shining exceptions they are the only girls we've had
world gold medals (or any other colour for that matter) out of so far.

I coach a national junior contender who is a lightweight - so the subject
is close to my heart!

Good luck - mail connor for more details on Thames RC

As many have said, Westminster do have some crews racing out of the
Polytechnic Boathouse, which is used by (amongst others) Quintin and
Kings College. (The address is Ibis Lane, Chiswick, W4). This year's
captain is Toby Roberts (ii...@westminster.ac.uk), who lurks around
here occasionally, so might have already been in contact.

In previous year's the standard of the men and the women has been
reasonable with a few wins and good placings here and there, I've
not seen them around much so can't comment on this year. I do know
though that they were given some money by the University (not, I think
the Union, see later) to buy some new boats, so the equipment level
is improving.

On a possibly dubious note (if you are lurking, Toby, perhaps you
could confirm or deny) I've heard some worrying gossip about the state
of Westminster's Student's Union finances. The word is (and I have only
heard this as gossip) that their Union has effectively gone bankrupt
and is not able to finance any sport etc.

The Students Union here at Westminster is again in financial trouble, as is the case usually at this time of year. This year there are several differences.

1. The System of checks on expentiture has kicked in and frozen the budgets
before they become over-spent.

2. The rowing club has raised its own funds and can compete independantly.

3. The University trustees have given us 20,000 pounds worth of new boats.

So look out for the world-beating summer eights around in June and July.

Dear Jennifer: How did you like Westminister University? My son may be going there for study abroad in Spring 2015, but I need to get a review from a Texan! As you were at UT, I would welcome your opinion on your study abroad semester at Westminister University in London, Best, Ann Smith

It happens from time to time that a Google search takes you back to a
post of 20 years ago, but you don't see its date. Perhaps that happened
to you as the post to which you're responding dates back to 1995.
Deeply frustrating! And their website seems to be dysfunctional at this
moment.

Maybe someone involved in the university will read this & respond?

Cheers -
Carl
