I had hernia surgery a week ago and would like to know from other rowers who
have had hernia surgery how long they spent away from sculling before safely
returning. I have been released by the Doctor who still feels I should do
little for 5 more weeks.

I had the same problem about six years ago.
Firstly it will depend on whether you had keyhole 'mesh' surgery or the full
open you up, stitch it up and four inch scar version.
I can only really speak on the later (that's what I had).
I had a pretty progressive doctor and he said that I should wait at least a
week to ten days before I started any exercise. Then I should walk
strenously and build it up to running over a week. When I could run, then I
could start swimming and after a week of that (about three weeks in total, I
could get back in a boat for light sessions. However all told, it was at
least 5 weeks before I was able to think about ergs or weights and probably
six to seven weeks before I was training at full pelt again. However doing
this, I didn't lose any fitness so it can't be bad.
Basically it will all come down to the difference between discomfort and
pain (which as a rower I guess you will know). It will feel uncomfortable
for a while (I had twinges for six months), but if it's painful lay-off the
exercise.
It will help if you sit well in the boat (weight on the hips, lower back
firm etc) because this will reduce the stress on the hernia (presuming it
was in the groin).

As in the other reply, it depends....
I was opened up a whole lot, and it was 4 weeks before I wanted to do anything -
tender.....
It was about 10 weeks before I felt safe doing a whole lot with any vigour.

When a friendly surgeon did a slash and grab on my appendix last year, I
wondered how long it would take to recover from the operation. The answer
was negotiable, depending on age, fitness, fatness, and how good a
seamstress the surgeons mother was. Six months later, I am almost, but not
quite fully recovered. If you think you are really better, try one of those
ab slide things, and after a number of minutes ask yourself how you feel.
The problem is that they have to sew you up a bit shorter on one side
and if you stretch it before it has grown together again, it tears a bit.
I could row 2 months afterwards to my usual standard, but it was
irritating.

It's now 54 weeks since surgery (two hernias, one umbilical). Now, my
involvement in rowing is usually as a coach, being in my latge 40's with a wonky
back. My recreational activities include a Japanese martial art called Aikido.
6 weeks after the op, I tried CAREFUL participation, but found that the warm-up
activites were a bit too much until about 10 weeks. 12 weeks or so, though, it
was pretty much full on.
Now, if my ruddy foot wasn't sore all the time, and ..... whinge, whinge,
whinge....
