(though I am sure you all groaned when you logged in here and saw 4
posts in a row by me, I apologize and hope my prolific postings were
worthwhile..... <g> )

My original question was overshadowed by the second question, so
I'll re-enter it.
What is the best and cheapest way to purchase a new Empacher
lightweight single. As I said earlier, I'm moving home for about the
next 6 months or so (after I graduate) and with no college to save
money for, hopefully I can put my positive cash flow to some good use.
After an erg, I hope to purchase a new single. I have sculled for
6 years, though the last 4 I have mostly swept.

Of course, if someone wants to talk me into some other type of boat,
I'm open to your opinions. However, from my own (albeit limited) experience,
Empacher makes utterly amazing singles. I'm expecting the price to be
$5000-$5500. Is that correct? (or course, tack on another $300 for
blades).

In the time since the original posting, I've hit a little snag that
will delay any possible purchase for at least an extra month. My bike
was stolen today, in broad daylight, locked to a steel rack, on M
street, in front of Georgetown Park Mall. I was inside for 5 minutes
delivering the Blue and the Gray Newspaper (its a thing we do to raise
$$$ for our team). I cam out, and it was gone. Over time, I've put
about $2000 into that bike. I personally re-built the crank system
with pieces I had made at a foundry in Macon, Ga. Needless to say, the
time, labor, and money I had put into it were considerable, and its
loss is regrettable. Well, I guess I won't be sculling in my own boat
for even longer!

(btw, doesn't Empacher custom build the boat for your height, weight,
etc, and send you updates during its building?)

You know this is funny...one would think this, but after the World
Championships in '92 in Montreal, I looked at the prices and found them *to be
more* than if I ordered them new...Every year there are 2-3 shipments organized
by someone in Philly or the Occaquan area and the shipping, insurance, etc
is minimized to next to nothing. You can get a new Empacher 1x for around
5300 - 5500 in one of these organized shipments. If an individual order
expect to pay around $7500.

Probably the best way for you to get a new Empacher is to buy an
ex-rental boat after the World Championships in Indianapolis.

If you write to Empacher at the following address:

Bootswerft Empacher
6930 Eberbach A. N.
Germany

they should be able to give you details of the available boats.
When I looked into buying one last year the price was DM 10,000
excluding sales tax and shipping.

At the risk of a commercial use of the net, I'd suggest an
alternative to a new Empacher: a Latvian Empacher knock-off,
made by theformer supplier to the Soviet National Team. Chris
Tolsdorf, the Novice Men's coach down here, is a supplier in
the U.S.

I don't know much about singles (our Julien trainers are about
all I can handle right now) but they are considerably cheaper
than Empachers and several are already in-country.

You can drop me a line or give him a call at our office,
(804)971-9721, ext. 264.

Peace,

Joel

Joel, I know Chris. He was an assistant coach here at Georgetown
last year. In fact, my pair partner and I (both lightweights) stayed
at his parents' house when we rowed in the open 2- at the IRA last
year. Say hi to him from me and Conal.
