Call it an historical relic or possibly modern art, the Concept 2 DYNO is a pièce de résistance you will surely want to prominently display in your living room. Possibly devised by the Marquis de Sade, this torture instrument has elicited confessions for all kinds of uncommitted crimes.

Many past users--at least one, anyway--are effusive:

"I totally approve of the DYNO.
Great machine. It beats the s..t out of you if you push yourself on it."

What is the DYNO?
Produced for just a handful of years and sold by Concept II until 2007, the DYNO is a unique combination of variable resistance leg press, seated bench press, and seated bench pull. Short for dynamometer--a device that measures force--the DYNO is a push-me, pull-you looking device with two seats, various handles, and a monitor that flips to face either direction. The key part, in my opinion, is the the DYNO lets you do the leg drive like in rowing, with no load on the recovery (unlike most leg press machines). And, you can watch tv or video easily while doing it.

The Concept II DYNO is the perfect antidote if you want at least a leg workout and have some upper body injury preventing you from rowing in a boat or training on an indoor rowing machine. The DYNO kept me sane when my shoulder was out of commission. You can use the DYNO leg press with injured ribs, achy wrists, mangled elbows and really all manner of upper body wreckage; as long as you can breathe and you have legs, you can use the DYNO leg press.

There was some interesting research re/the DYNO: see my erstwhile, forgotten blog: http://scullduggery.blogspot.com/2011/03/dyno-leg-press.html

Stuff you should know:

1. It's a bit of a beast in terms of size. Approx. Dimensions: L: 8 ft. W: 3 ft H: 4 ft, Weight:120 lbs. It can be dismantled.

2. You'll have to pick this up if you want it. It's in Ashland, Oregon, home of great chocolate and Shakespeare plays and not a half bad rowing venue. Enough reasons to visit.

4. I can send specific photos of this unit if you're interested.

Yes, I am really asking $600 for it. At some point, I will either use the parts for some kinetic sculpture, or save it for when I get back into rowing.

Couple of comments.

1- The Dyno at our club (Berkeley Paddling and Rowing) sat almost unused for five years, but there is now rather active use. I find it is particularly useful for getting oneself into the sort of quad distress that characterizes red-line racing _without_ the cardio stress that racing entails. Notably, one can test readiness for head races by doing 600-rep leg-press pieces.

2- I talked to a support person at C2 about some Dyno servicing matter. In the course of the call, the C2 guy asked if we wanted to sell our Dyno, because, he said, the Coast Guard seems to want any that come available. When you think about it, the Dyno is ideal for Coast Guard Cutter-size vessels.

This echoes my experience.

I donated this DYNO to our club (then Ashland Rowing Club, now Rogue Rowing) and it sat unused for 5+ years. I used it myself for when I had a shoulder ailment and then I watched it gather dust. The club was going to haul it to the dump and asked if I wanted it back. If I were still rowing, I would have just kept it (as ungainly as it was).

I think Concept 2 tried to make a generalist machine (upper and lower body workouts) but if they had just focused on the quad workout they could have just lopped off 3 feet of the machine and probably 20+ pounds associated with the upper body part. It was still a very small market, but a great machine.
