Does any one remeber Simmons original muslim gimmick in the WCW, during
his pre-Doom heel turn he teamed with the Iron Shiek who refered to
Simmons as his muslim brother, does anyone know what his real religion
is. I liked Simmons interview, I think he gave great heel interviews in
ECW, and I think he is way better as a heel, however they have to dump
that outfit.

Anyone think Junior got too many ideas from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,
Abdul-Rauf, and Muhammad Ali? As in, black athletes changing their
names when they convert to Islam?

On Superstars, Junior did try to call the "mystery man" Ron Simmons,
but he responded to the name in a hostile manner. In a manner that
gave me ideas that he did not like that name, not that he got that
name wrong.

And anyone notice what the WWF is doing with Bret Hart? The sabattical
is setup to get him one HUGE pop when he comes back. Look at Sid and
Warrior. The putdowns by Sincere and Austin are only adding heat,
keeping him in our minds.

If I'm to take a guess, I would have to surmise that Simmons was
originally supposed to come in as just Farooq Asad -- unknown to
anyone as Ron Simmons. But when Lawler let the cat out of the bag on
RAW, having Simmons "renounce" his true name for his gimmick name was
Vince's way of recovering from a faux pas.

Not to mention the fact that he's still in the openings of a couple of
the TV shows...

I think either way, this is a good way to explain a guys name change
in a "we know you're really xxx pretending to be yyy"

BTW did anyone else think Veruca Salt when they said RS's new name?

When I first heard him refer to himself as Feruq Assad, I thought he
said Veruca Salt. Maybe rasslers will start naming themselves after
one-hit-wonder alternative bands after they fall off the charts.

Varuca was the rich girl who wanted everything and eventually ended up
falling into the incinerator where all the bad golden chocolate Easter
eggs that are laid by tempermental geese go. The girl that chewed the
gum and turned into a blueberry was Violet.

What, wouldn't you like to see the Oompah-Loompah guys wrestle for the
WWF?

Well, this whole name change thing happens in the real world as well.
I can't count the times I've been friends with a black man with a name
like Randy, and then the next time I see him, he's got an accent and
wants everyone to call him Jamal-Abdul-Karama. It happens, and I'm
sure it pisses off the average wrestling fan, thus making Ron over as
a heel... Well, kind of.

WWF is insinuating then that such change of name is negative? That
because a person changed his philosophy on life to a less accepted
one he is worse for that? I doubt that's something to be proud of
for Vince.

I love seeing threads like this come back. Good stuff.

Farooq's Pre-Acolytes Blue Outfit was pretty darn cool, I thought.
