- WWF.com's new design shuts out some web users. PWTorch.com reader Dan
Flowers writes: "Well, I know many people
like the new WWF site but wrestling fans on WebTV are left out big
time. WebTV is far behind in internet technologies and
now since WWF.com relaunched it is totally incompatible with WebTV. If
you click on news or superstars nothing happens.
Their videos are now embedded on the site so we have to validate the
files to get them to play, a very long process. This is so
disappointing. I visit that site about as much as PWTorch.com!"

that's like responding to a federal decree mandating a minimum speed limit of
240 mph with "Then get a real car, duh." just because you happen to own a
mclaren f1.

it's too bad that everyone eschews standardization in favor of requiring 40
trillion dumb and useless plugins to view their pages.

No, its more like people complaining about a 55 mph speed limit because they're
driving a Model T.

Needing an ISP other than Webtv isn't like making a decree of 240mph speed
limits, its more like saying you can't ride your bicycle on the freeway.

well, <insert topic of your reply> isn't like <insert verb action of your

So when AOL comes out with their version of WEB-TV, something called AOL-TV,
will they have the same problems?

don't feel bad, the new WWF site sucks for many users. I use a "normal" ISP,
I have a DSl connection, and with both IE and Netscape on my Mac the site
blows, the videos don't play, pages don't come up and what does work is slow
as hell. Frankly WWF got robbed by whoever or whatever designed that site.
They should start over.

The videos on their site are some kind of Microsoft format. You need
the Microsoft Media Player in order to view them. I don't know if it's
available for Mac.

It looks like crap anyway... the old site was infinitely better.

I admit webtv is not great. They do offer software upgrades, but
without hardware upgradability you are out of luck. I would have
thought some company would comeout with a unit similar to webtv, but
only have it hardware and software upgradable, instead of having to go
the pc route. I have a pc and don't mind using it, but I prefer to use
a webtv for the internet.
In terms of the WWF website? I was not a big fan of it anyway. I
would rather go to a neutral wrestling site.

Many websites are trying to maximize their websites with the latest and
greatest technology, without realizing that they are leaving some of
those people who access those websites out in the cold, due to the
upgrade.

It reminds of those mailorder catalog companies, who end up developing a
website and do away with their mailorder catalog. They assume most of
those people who receive the catalog and order via mailorder
(customers), also have access to the internet. That is not neccesarily
the case.

Windows Media Player is available for the Mac. It's a slightly earlier
version than the latest one available for the PC, but on most sites it works
ok, just not nearly as good as say Real Player 8.0 - But on most sites it
DOES work, on the new wwf site I can't get the videos to work at all. It
would be grooving if they would switch to real video...

Not really. RealVideo is pretty crappy. I'd much rather use Media
Player. Not that it matters much; I don't do much streaming of anything
due to a modem connection.

With a DSL modem and real video 8.0 one can view full screen VHS quality
video. Much better quality than Media Player. On a modem connection, your
right, doesn't really matter, they both kinda suck.

I've looked at the page a couple times over the last few days (using Netscape
under UNIX with a direct internet connection, don't know exactly what kind).
The main page gave a 404 error every single time. Tuesday I was having a
horrible time trying to load anything. I wanted to read their report of Raw
because I don't have cable and it took forever to get anything loaded. I had
to reload pages over and over to get anything to come up. Even then, the
writeup went from the old three pages to now six making me wade through
even more page loads and waiting time. After struggling to get the first
three pages I quit and decided to try again the next day (they did work
better then). Also at that time, I couldn't even load the help page to see
who to write to about the problems. I tried webm...@wwf.com and it didn't
bounce, so maybe someone got the message. The page looks OK, but as someone
else mentioned, doing all the latest technology things isn't necessarily the
best way to go. I'll take a simpler page that loads faster and gives me just
what I want over a complicated page that takes forever to load and gives me
a whole bunch of junk I don't care about. I think the WWF needs to work on
the site. They should have made sure that everything worked at least as
well as before, if not better, before going ahead with the relaunch. Given
my experience and a few of the posts I've read here, they didn't do that and
a bunch of people either have problems or just don't like the site. Maybe
they'll fix things up soon.
