I think not. But what would you as a wrestling fan say to someone that said
"Why do you watch that fake crap?"
"It's sweaty men rubbing on each other"
"It's racist and promotes stereotypes"

I'm just interesting in how you'd defend wrestling.

Flip them off and then give them a stunner.

I believe that's an appropriate wrestling-themed response.

>"Why do you watch that fake crap?"

This in my mind is a dumb question, if wrestling was REAL, I wouldn't watch it.
Why? it would be barbaric, seeing men beat up children, etc. I could go on
to give a reason why I do watch wrestling, but that would take time. It comes
down to the athletic aspect of it, the art of it, and of course, the
comedy/entertainment aspect of it.

>"It's sweaty men rubbing on each other"

What does this mean? Football and Boxing involve sweating men who touch
eachother. But, if you notice, they aren't exactly hugging eachother. If a
man is so insecure in his sexual identity, that he can't watch a wrestling
match, he needs therapy. Its something we all did growing up in the backyard
with the neighborhood kids, even if the wrestling was just on the ground
rolling back and forth. There is nothing homoerotic about the wrestling
itself. Besides, I like watching it, as its called an "Athletic event" as
opposed to martha stewart.

>"It's racist and promotes stereotypes"

That's part of the entertainment value. This is WRESTLING. Sgt Slaughter is a
Traitor, there is an aligator/crocidile skinner, there is an undertaker, there
is a............

Of course they use stereotypes. This isn't a soap opera boys and girls, where
they use years to "develop characters." They need something simple that people
will seem familiar with, thus, they use many common stereotypes. They
shouldn't be faulted on this all that much, however, since after all, its meant
to be taken at face value, not to be philosiphized about.

Why do you watch ER or Friends? Is it real? No, it's fake. Everything on
TV is fake.

> "It's sweaty men rubbing on each other"

They're not "rubbing on each other," they're pretending to beat each other
up. It's like watching a fight scene in a movie, with more elaborate
moves. Also, do these people think real (amateur) wrestling is also
homoerotic?

> "It's racist and promotes stereotypes"

It has characters, just like every show on TV. Is the Sopranos bigoted
because it portrays some Italians as mobsters? No - some Italians ARE
mobsters. Others aren't. Wrestling has characters based (loosely) on
certain types of people that exist in real life.

Markish answer: It's not fake, it's scripted. There's a difference.
My normal answer: And Seinfeld is reality based?

> "It's sweaty men rubbing on each other"

Smartass answer: "Nice of you to notice" ,then watch the inner
homophobe come blasting out.

Markish answer: Soccer is gayer then wrestling will ever be. (It's
true! It's true! :))

> "It's racist and promotes stereotypes"

Smartass answer: "Name one!" (Of course we could, but anyone clueless
enough to ask the question probably can't come up with a single
instance.)

> I'm just interesting in how you'd defend wrestling.

The only way to defend wrestling would be to ask the naysayer to watch
the show, and judge for themselves. Trying to verbally convince anyone
who'd ask those questions would be an exercise in futility.

Soap operas are fake, TV sitcoms are fake, movies are fake, but most people
watch them.

> "It's sweaty men rubbing on each other"

So are most pro sports.

> "It's racist and promotes stereotypes"

Sure it does, just like TV, and the media do. It's a good way to keep
people mad at each other, so they don't have to solve any real problems.

As for the sterotyping, it's done just the same way as it is in TV shows,
for bad writers who can't properly build a character or storyline.

> I'm just interesting in how you'd defend wrestling.

Very easly. Of course if they asked me if it was an "okay" thing for
children to watch, I would say no.

Exactly - I wonder this all the time. How can anyone who watches significant
amount of TV diss wrestling?? Surely, wrestling isn't any less brute than
movies like Gladiator. Surely it isn't any more exploitative than TV game
shows like Jerry Springer or Marry a millionare. So where does anyone get off
being on a moral high horse looking down on wrestling fans?

Funny how this is actually considered a legit excuse by people. Stupid
self-righteous "high class" people above enjoying the pleasures of wrestling.

Exactly.

Yes, they have to advance fast. Soap opera's have time. Watch any soap-opera
and tell me that it isn't a stereotype of "High-Class" USA.

Good post Big Crapper. Go out to any of the current movies showing in your
theaters now none of them are "real"...some of them employ stereotypes
"British as evil in "Patriot" (why???)...trials and tribulations in the Days
of Our Lives is another example. I challenge anyone to tell me how
daytime-soaps are any different than the McMahon wrestling saga.

Now what we need is a good decent wrestling movie to finally hit the big
screens so that the country can see it isn't "barbaric and prehistoric".

By looking down on Jerry Springer, Marry a Millionaire and Gladiator.
It's easy!

People have given good answers to the first three questions (good grief,
does anyone think that the fact that wrestling is scripted will be news
to a fan?).

The last question about stereotypes is harder, though; it's the issue
that gives me the most problems with non-fans. The best answer is that
wrestling is getting better than it used to be, especially re blacks,
Asians and latinos (but see Latino Heat). But it's still often
problematic, especially re women and gays. And if you care about such
things, it is generally worse than most other popular culture.--Joe
