I remember Killer Karl Kox (KKK). He was always one
of my favorite wrestlers. I grew up watching Gordon
Solie on Championship Wrestling from FLorida in the
mid-late 70's. I first saw Kox as a heel who had
an imaginary friend named Alex. He would always
point in the air and talk to Alex. He was a "crazy"
guy or anything, I think it was (as the angle went)
a result of him fighting in Korea.

Anyway, one day this Korean, Pak Song (there's a
name from the past, who certainly can be a
candidate for the ugliest wrestler) attacked a
young Steve Keirn after the bell, when a heel
KKK entered the ring. I remember Gordon saying
"Oh, no, we need help here, Kox is gonna help
Pak Song." Anyway before Kox jumps in to
nail Keirn with his boot, he stops and
consults Alex. After this "chat" with Alex,
he nails PAK SONG and thus the face turn.
He then goes and talks to Gordon and said,
I didn't see a friend attacking my enemy, but
I saw a Korean, a gook, and Alex reminded me
of the suffering I went through over there..."

or something like that.. Anyway, this was
actually the first turn I saw as a wrestling
fan. About a year later KKK made a turn back to
heel when a young Jim Garvin was the Florida
champion. Kox was Garvin's mentor and
Garvin was defending his belt weekly on TV.

One day, as Garvin was wrestling a guy named
King Curtis from Singapore, Kox stepped up onto
the ring apron to give Garvin some last minute
advice. As Kox had Garvin's backed turned to
the ring, he signaled King Curtis to attack
Garvin and take the belt, thus the return to
heel status.

oops, rambling again, whuch brings me to the
next article....

I sure do, back in the early '70's he was a regular downunder and whenever
he was around, it wasn't to be missed. He was one of the toughest from
what I regard as the 'Golden Age'. He'd regularly hold the title when he
was in Oz, and I remember an absolute classic tag match he was in with
Killer Kowalski against Bruno Sammartino and a local star Mario Milano
(Mario was an Italian wrestling legend in Oz). It was the only time Bruno
wrestled in Australia. (2-3 week in 1968). The last time KKK (it was
KIller Karl Kox btw) he had a great feud with a young Mark Lewin that
ended with Lewin being put in hospital after they ended up brawling in
the carpark at Festial Hall in Melbourne. If a real life grudge existed
in wrestling this was it, seeing Lewin being dropped head first in the
middle of a busy Melbourne street and KKK being led away by the local
police, it made page 2 of the papers and all. Memories.

Kox was a staple on Championship Wrestling from Florida in the late 70s.
I remember him doing a "Son of Sam" bad guy angle in which he always
heard voices from someone named "Alex". He turned good guy for a while,
and a Marine angle was played up. He put a young Jimmy Garvin through
"boot camp", then turned bad again.

One angle from the old Gordon Solie Champ. Wres. from Fla had Steve Kiern
and his old man doing a patriotic shtick. Kox was a heel but someone
attacked Kiern's dad (who was supposedly a POW from 'Nam) and Kox made
the save being the 'ex Marine' he was. In real life the turn followed an
incident in Tampa where Kox beat up some guy. The female judge put him
on probation and community service and I always suspected the patriotic
marine angle had something to do with all of this.

I remember Killer Karl Kox,from Mid-South Wrestling.He and
Dick Murdoch had one of the bloodiest battles ever the area,he returned in
1983
to battle Skandor Akbar's Devestation,Inc. and he brought a steel
entrenching
tool to the ring and clobbered him at a few house shows.Kox was one of the
only
Mid-South Brass Knux champions ever.
