Wilmington, Del. -- USA Networks Inc. lost its
court battle against World Wrestling
Federation Entertainment Inc. and Viacom
Inc. Tuesday.
The decision means the four WWF series that
are currently carried on USA Network will
move to The Nashville Network and MTV:
Music Television, which are both owned by
Viacom, in September.
It's an enormous loss for USA, since the
network will be hard-pressed to replace the
popular WWF programs, including the
Monday-night Raw Is War, which is the
highest-rated weekly show in basic cable.
The decision allows Viacom and WWFE to
move forward with the strategic alliance they
hatched in April, which sparked the USA suit.
In addition to distributing the four WWF series,
Viacom will distribute games from WWFE's
XFL football league on TNN. Viacom will also
distribute WWF radio programs, distribute
WWF pay-per-view events in its theaters and
develop new WWF-themed television series,
among other ventures.
USA sued Viacom and WWFE in April, seeking
to enforce its first-refusal rights. The company
argued unsuccessfully in court that it shouldn't
have to match anything in the Viacom proposal
that didn't concern the four series it currently
carries.

I, for one, would rather see the WWF on MTV rather than TNN, no matter how much
TNN is revamped.
