If you could just any twenty wrestlers, just twenty, to start a promotion,
from anywhere in the world, over any time period, who would you have?
Here's my roster.
1. Bret Hart
When Hart was at his best he could have a good match with pretty much
anybody, he's good on the microphone and could work a good angle in my
promotion. He's one of the few great technical wrestlers who could speak
English.
2. Chris Jericho
I'd give him the mic often and let him be more spontaneous and original than
he is in the WWF. He could have great matches with a number of opponents on
this roster as I feel that when he is put in with a good worker he always
wrestles far better than when he's in with a lesser worker. Along with
Bret, a top name mid carder at least.
3. Chris Benoit
Obviously. The best worker in the WWF at the moment, amongst the best in
the world, he has the intensity and the general wrestling ability to really
get over on the strength of ring work alone. Which is lucky, because he
wouldn't get all the much mic time with me.
4. Mick Foley
At his best, Foley was totally the man. He'd be able to put on really
hardcore/extreme matches, not the cookie sheet crap we see on TV these days,
and work great matches with a number of opponents. In time, I'd work him
into gimmick matches like Stairway To Hell and, of course, Hell In A Cell.
He's kinda lost the zing from his fastball now though, obviously, but I'm
talking about Foley at his best.
5. Jeff Hardy
Could go on to be the best American worker in a hell of a long time. Think
of all the great matches he could have with opponents on this list, plus I
believe he could be taught to work the mic in which case he really would be
the new HBK.
6. Rey Misterio Jr.
Another guy who ranks amongst the worlds best. He could have a string of
top quality matches with pretty much anybody on this list. A must have.
7. Great Sasuke
No need to explain this choice. American wrestling marks don't know what
they are missing with guys like Great Sasuke. If I were to run a King Of
The Ring style Pay Per View, Great Sasuke could carry any opponent on this
list to a number of great **** matches on the way to the final match. A
true genious.
8. Rob Van Dam
I think RVD is underrated. His matches with people like Jerry Lynn and Sabu
stick in my mind, he is incredibly quick and he bumps well. Watch a
RVD/Lynn match and you can see how speedy and realistic the reversals and
counters are between the two. If ECW went under I'd like to see RVD in the
WWF to take on Benoit, Jeff Hardy etc.
9. Super Crazy
I'm sure when this guys contract runs up Jim Ross will come knocking on his
door. One of the few great wrestlers ECW has, if they lost him and RVD who
would they have? Crazy/Jeff Hardy would be a sight to behold, especially in
a cage.
10. Eddy Guererro
Charisma and wrestling ability. At his best, capable of *****.
11. Juventud Guererra
Watch him take on Guererro/Misterio Jr. and tell me you wouldn't want to see
that again. Capable of consistent **** bouts.
12. Dean Malenko
The last of the psychological greats. He is underutilised by Vince McMahon
but in my promotion he'd be given the chance to fulfill his **** potential.
13. Jushin Liger
A truly exceptional wrestler. Put him in the ring with Benoit and watch
genious at work. Another must have.
14. Shawn Michaels
I'd make him my number one guy simply because he's so good on the mic and
can work as well as many of these wrestlers. Michaels/Benoit or
Michaels/Liger would rock.
15. Sabu
Miles better than people like Taz, who he carried in their ECW encounters.
Sabu/Jeff Hardy would be ***** unless they decided to be totally below their
best.
16. Too Cold Scorpio
I like the guy as a worker, what can I say. He deserves a spot here
although I wouldn't see him advancing very far on up the ladder.
17. Terry Funk
Hardcore icon, in his early years quite athletic and a solid worker. I'd
have him simply for more Sabu/Funk or Foley/Funk matches.
18. Matt Hardy
He doesn't get as extreme as his brother Jeff but some people think he's a
better worker. i don't but he deserves his spot.
19. Mitsuharu Misawa
An excellent wrestler who could take everybody on this roster to an
exceptional match.
20. Psicosis
How gay are WCW to let the guy go? He may not be the best but he could be
"carried" by better workers to potentially ***** matches.
So how would I book just one card in this promotion? I'm almost spoilt for
choice, but here we go:
Matt Hardy versus Too Cold Scorpio (predicted ***)
Mick Foley versus Terry Funk (tables and ladders, predicted ****)
Super Crazy versus Jeff Hardy (ladders, predicted *****)
Eddy Guererro versus Juventud Guererra (****)
Mitsuharu Misawa versus Chris Benoit (*****)
Sabu versus Chris Jericho (****)
Psicosis versus Jushin Liger (*****)
Dean Malenko versus Rob Van Dam (****1/2)
Rey Misterio Jr versus Great Sasuke (*****)
Shawn Michaels versus Bret Hart (***)
I'd buy that pay per view, don't know about you :)

1. Steve Austin --Now this is assuming he makes a full recovery.
Austin will definitely put people in the seats and that's definitely
an important aspect of wrestling.
2. Mick Foley --He's just invaluable. I'd take him even in his
current commissioner role. Definitely one of the best mic workers in
the business.
3. Chris Benoit --Able to get over on wrestling skills alone. I'm
liking his current gimmick.
4. Chris Jericho --Gold on the mic and not bad in in-ring skills
either.
6. Eddy(this is starting to sound like the wwf) --Amazing heel
charisma and great in the ring.
7. Kanyon --I'm really digging his current "Positively Kanyon" work.
6. Jeff Hardy --Makes every opponent look like a million bucks.
7. Matt Hardy --Can't have one without the other. Probably better
overall than his brother.
8. TAKA Michinoku --Rudo extraordinare. Able to get over despite his
lack of language skills. Not to mention the fact that he's a god in
the ring.
9. CIMA --See TAKA.
10. SUWA --For the same reasons as CIMA. They could also make one
hell of a tag-team if the fed was low in that area.
11. Vader --If you can get other wrestlers to bump for him, he could
be a #1 heel.
12. Kurt Angle --One of the best gimmicks in wrestling right now and
not too shabby in the ring either.
13. Yoshihiro Tajiri --Tons of charisma plus some of the stiffest
kicks in all of wrestling.
14. Steve Corino --Classic heel. One of the best in the business.
Also doesn't hessitate to bump for his opponents.
15. Booker T --Tons of charisma. Not bad in the ring either.
16. Ikuto Hidaka. I really like his Battlarts stuff not to mention
his short stay in ECW.
17. Christopher Daniels --Great ring-worker. Decent amount of
charisma too.
18. Jody Flash --I loved what little work of his I've seen in MPro.
19. Triple H --One of the best heels in the business. Greatly
improved in the ring as well.
20. Vampiro --I just like him, that's all.

It would have been a lot easier to do this either by decade or
by country, there's so many greats that we've both left off it's
ridiculous. After all, Ray Stevens ought to be on here, Kobashi,
Takada in his prime, Nick Bockwinkel, etc...

Probably because I grew up in the heart of WWWF country when Bruno was
around, but he'll always be "the man" as far as I'm concerned.

Again maybe because I'm a WWWF mark, but Vader couldn't touch Monsoon in
his prime.

Hey it's fantasy, take whoever you like. He's the first high-flyer I

I wouldn't really call Douglas in ECW Flair-light (Flair wanna be yes).
He ushered in the ECW attitude that the WWF co-opted.

I don't now how I missed Benoit, but on reflection, with Hart why do we
need Benoit. When Foley goes from the mat to a chair to the top rope and
jumps off I'll agree we don't need Sabu, but until then...

Huge draw in his prime, just to revise his feud with Superstar Billy
Graham makes him worth keeping.

I know what you mean. I wanted to fit the Crusher in badly, just

Your explanations make sense. My choices are pretty much
predicated by ring-work alone with little regard for mic skills.
It's also apparent that at probably the same ages you got to see
a lot of WWWF while I got to watch the NWA... ;-) We didn't get
WWWF out here so I never really saw Morales in his prime or much
of Graham's title run. I've since been able to acquire a few
tapes of Graham and Sammartino, but very little material with
Morales.
A lot of my choices (like Vader) are based on their work in
Japan, Vader has never even been close to being used correctly
in the States. Sort of the Steve Williams syndrome, both men
need opponents that can hang with their exceptional stiff style.

My federation has diversity, but also has enough wrestlers of each style so
that it would work out. We also have a few entertainers but the focus would be
wrestling.
See, I'd actually rather have Backlund as number 1 face (well, I guess the fans
would make him heel nowadays).

Vader, ok, good choice especially since we have other AJPW workers.

Yes, I'd take the good Funk anyday. A challenge for Backlund.

Sabu would drag the workrate down. He's the least compatible wrestler I've
seen. Look at his matches with Taz: Taz offense, Sabu offense, horrible
transitions because of their style differences. Benoit on the other hand, can
blend with either guy. I pick Benoit as our resident brawler.
>>13. Nikita Koloff

I'd rather have Brian Pillman instead of Koloff. Heck, if we need a foreigner,
I'd rather take Regal anyday.

I don't know Jack (!) so I'd still have to go with Austin. Besides, we'd get
to see the Benoit-Austin match where both guys' heads explode from intensity.
>>17. Brian Pillman (from his ECW/WWF days)
