I want someone to explain it to me. I want someone to explain to me
why people are so enamored of Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

I've seen countless letters, articles, and internet posts singing the
praises of "one of the greatest WWF champions ever" (A quote from one
of the biggest wrestling news sites out there). I read countless
testimonials talking about his in-ring prowess, his classic matches,
and his willingness to work with anyone. I see word after word talking
up his great skills on the microphone, cutting promos.

And I read these and think, "Am I watching a different Triple H?"

I watch Triple H and see a younger Hulk Hogan, a more stable Scott
Steiner, a more active Kevin Nash. And this is all before the stunts
he's been pulling this week. For a couple of years, I've seen a man
shoved down our throats. A man given the heel god push of all pushes.
A man who will pull a 2 1/2 to 3 star matches out every four months or
so, seemingly just to prove that he can, then proceed to punch and knee
through his next two dozen matches. I've watched a man who's lost
cleanly in an important match - PPV or not - maybe twice in the last 18
months. A man who has been in more drawn out, neverending angles than
anyone this side of the nWo.

And this isn't just a matter of taste. Of just not liking Helmsley's in-
ring style. I truly do not see the appeal. And I truly do not see how
people can ignore the obvious negatives he displays on an almost
nightly basis. And as I've said, this is before his stunts of this
week and his obvious backstage politicking. If somebody - ANYBODY -
can explain, please do!

I asked a similar question on the alt.pro-wrestling.wwf newsgroup. Is he
that damn good or is this an elaborate media campaign to sell an average
wrestler to viewers? Does he have the wrestling skills of a Bret Hart or
the charisma of a Shawn Michaels (great wrestler too)? IMHO, no. He isn't
in the same league with these guys. I personally like Triple H. Maybe
his appeal for me has largely to due with the fact that I'm a female who
appreciates his manly attributes. :D

His promos suck. He's carryable to good matches, as Benoit proved.

Come now.. HHH's angles are nowhere near as long and dull as anything
involving, say, Steve Austin or Vince McMahon. The Steph stuff isn't really
an "angle", anymore - she's just his on-screen wife. The actual "will they
won't they split" storyline is fading out rapidly. The feud with The Rock
produced a few entertaining matches, and HHH vs Jericho at Last Man Standing
is my pick for US MOTY. HHH vs Benoit was the best match at No Mercy, HHH vs
Foley at the start of the year is massively overrated, but again most of the
net would say the Royal Rumble one was MOTY.

Yes, he's overpushed. Yes, he sucks on the mic. No, he doesn't suck in the
ring.

Never liked him until the last few months. He puts in a good day's
work, draws heat and he'll sell for guys. In this day and age, that puts
you amoungst the elite. :)
I didn't hear about his antics of the last week but I'm sure he's no
stranger to backroom politics which makes me think a little less of him.

He was a member of the Clique, which along with Hogan is the pinnacle of
backstage politicking.

I've always liked the guy for some reason or another. Granted, he is not the
best ever and is/was overpushed . . . and is carriable at best on the mic . . .
he's been working his ass off in the ring since he's gotten the belt for the
first time the night after SummerSlam '99. That's VERY obvious and, to me, it
makes him commendable.

In the WWF, he's among the best in transition, psychology, and pacing. His
moveset isn't that varitiated (is that a word?), but he uses what he has in
good fashion.

Good point! I'm a female, and I was going to say "because he has a great
ass". :-)

I can not speak for everyone but I think the reason why I think Trip is
a great wrestler is his the work he does to get other people over.
Whether he was playing a heel or a face he does his damnedest to sell
his opponents moves. He is a team player that can make anyone look good,
including the Rock. I think Rock's rises to popularity is a direct
result of Trip selling him like snake oil at a traveling carnival.
