Triple A Lucha Libre --- 7/18/93
Oh boy. For the second straight week. We get cheesed with a watered
down version of AAA. The first 90 minutes of Galavision's 2.5 hour
show dealt with CMLL, the remaining time was enough for 2 AAA matches.
A brief summary of what was to be seen on CMLL.
- Before show starts, they show small school boy wandering into deserted
CMLL arena. Boy wanders through parking lot. Car drives in. Out
pops --- Ultimo Dragon! Dragon chats to the kid in Spanish (at boy,
Asai!) then takes the mask off and gives it to the little runt. The
mask removal was from behind, naturally.
- The first match was "midgets". All four of these boys were candidates
for "young man" or "merely short". I watched Caddy shack during this
match.
- Next featured a quasi-rematch from last week, with the usual twist of
having Felino and Negro Casas on the same team. Casas' interference
cost Felino the welterweight title last week. Some sparks at end, but
Casas settled his boy down. Pretty good match, to be honest. At least
what I watched. Caddyshack _was_ on.
- Last, we had a match with Candian Vampire Casanova and La Fiera on the
same team, so Fiera is a technico, at least for now...
Now for the _real_ action...
First Match -- Rudos in three falls
===========
Rudos: Terremoto, Maremoto, and Hecatombe (all masked)
Technicos: Zafiro, Diamante, and Brillante (all masked)
These guys remind me of Los Metalicos (if these are in fact Los Metalicos,
somebody wake me up). Three homogeneous looking young guys, who fly
with total abandon. That and they always job to bottom feeder trios.
I guess it's paying dues...
1st caida: Starts off rather slow. As is their custom, the faces do
a bunch of extraneous flips for no apparent reason. The
technicos win with a variety of sunset flips and victory
rolls.
2nd caida: Fairly quick fall. Rudos triple team Brillante. Zafiro gets
in and is promptly pinned after a top rope plancha by
Hecatombe. Maremoto executes a cool slam on Diamante. Then
Hecatombe goes for a back splash off the ropes. A fairly
common move. As Hecatombe goes to the ropes, he steps on the
prone Diamante. It did not look like he did it on purpose.
The splash missed by a cool foot. Hecatombe leaned back and
pinned him anyway. If I haven't mentioned it already, the
rudo team isn't too hot. Let me just say Hecatombe is the
_best_ of the lot.
3rd caida: Rudos jumps technicos to start fall. Brutal, with heads slammed
into turnbuckles, posts, ringside railing. Rudos get Zafiro
in 3 man submission. Zafiro's partners come in and clean
house. Soon followed the hot spot of the match. Brillante
hits Maremoto with tope. Hecatombe climbs to second rope and
does a "Kyoko Inoue butt block" to the floor. Zafiro flips
over Terremoto and flies out of the ring. They could have
shown a movie on the flight. Zafiro crash lands on the three
men outside the ring. Hecatombe with a cross body block
through ropes (see: Bull Nakano). Diamante with sommersault
splash from top rope on everybody outside the ring. Whew!
Hecatombe and Brillante make it back in the ring.
Brillante hits a rana (read "Frankensteiner") for a near fall.
On his next try, Hecatombe catches him, and powerbombs him to
the mat. To nobody's surprise, Hecatombe gets the three.
None of the rudos highly impressed me. There best attribute
seemed to be being on the business end of a tope. Curiously
enough, they have the same theme music as Vader does in Japan.
It's a cool song, but meant for a destructive force, not a
trio of jobbers. It's kinda like the Brooklyn Brawler coming
out to "Also Sprach Zarahustra" :)
** 3/4 (Mostly for last 3 minutes)
Second Match -- Faces in three falls
============
Rudos: Rocco Valente, Tony Arce, Vulcano (all masked, same outfit)
Technicos: Winners, Solar, Angel Azteca (all masked)
This had a fairly elaborate entrance, even by AAA standard. Angel Azteca
came out wearing a big ol' flamming head dress with a 20 person
"Authentic Aztec Tribal Band" [TM] banging some drums. Winners came
out with must have been his son on his shoulders wearing a mini-Winners
outfit. Yeah, I know but the kid was too small to even be a midget.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this rudo team known as Los Destructores?
I heard no mention of it during this telecast, but I heard it elsewhere
before. I really like these guys. They are very stiff and use very
brutal looking moves. Oh, and they look quite alike so a few names
might be misplaced. Sorry.
1st caida: Technicos dominate. Faces get pin when Solar monkey flips
Rocco into turnbuckle, followed by schoolboy. Angel
Azteca gets his with a top rope plancha, followed by a rana.
Winners tries a cool bridge type move, but chokes it, and ends
up _way_ in the ropes. No win for Winners :)
2nd caida: Solar abuses all three rudos trying to triple team. Angel
comes in and follows suit. Winners -- no dice. Rudos work
him over stiff like, with drop kicks (these guys put a
lot of "umph" into their kicks), cup checks, clotheslines.
Then a really cool brutal move. Winners is dragged past
ropes so torso extends over edge of apron. Arce jumps over
top rope and _lands_ on Winners back. Valente gets the
pin on solar with a placha. Winners finds his way back in the
ring. Arce and Valente hold him in mid-air. Vulcano hits
a buttdrop while Winners is _still_being_held! Ooof!
Angel is caught in a submission hold that looked like an
upside down men's room sign. Dont' ask.
3rd caida: They cut to women in crowd blowing a horn. Arce grabs the horn
and uses it on the three faces. Rudos beat heck out of faces
for a good while. Faces turn it around. Solar takes out
Vulcano with a tope. In the ring Angel Azteca gets
Valente in neck breaker, followed by arm bar for ubmission
victory.
*** 1/2 (pretty brutal moves)
