Just found this newsgroup, and as a on-and-off (currently on) fan for 30
years, I am sometimes amazed to see some of the folks still around. I
remember watching Bobby Heenan as a wrestler, not to mention Dusty Rhodes.

Anyhow, without for-sure knowledge, my guess for the oldest active
wrestler is Jake Roberts. Seems I remember him as Jacques Robert as half
of the French Foreign Legion in the late 60's.

I went to all the old Roy Shire promotions at San Francisco's Cow Palace
between about 1965-75, and really enjoyed watching Ray Stevens, Pat
Patterson, Pepper Gomez and some of the other NWA wrestlers who came
through. It was also interesting as the west coast was often a training
ground for young wrestlers who would be successful later (like Pedro
Morales and Superstar Billy Graham).

If anyone has any questions about that era and area, feel free to contact
me.

Don't forget Dory Funk Jr. I saw him billed in a WWF PPV not too long ago. (I
didn't get the event so I don't know if he was actually in it.) He is 50++

I believe that Bobo Brazil still does a few shows and it has been a few
years since he has seen sixty.

Now that the Sheik is no longer wrestling, I would say that the oldest
active wrestler would either be Shohei Baba, Antonio Inoki or Abdullah the
Butcher.

Abdullah the Butcher was born Nov.2 1936, and debuted in 1958.
Shohei Baba was born in 1938, on Jan. 23 and debuted on Sept. 30, 1960.
And finally, Antonio Inoki was born Feb. 20, 1943, and debuted Sept.
30, 1960. Just thought you might want to know that Marty Jannety also
has the same birthday as Inoki, but in '63. Thank you for your time. I
also have debute and birth dates of just about every other current and
retired, and dead wrestler.

Thanks for the info. As I only get the two major federations, I had no
idea that Bobo Brazil and Abdullah the Butcher were still around. Christ,
how do you wrestle while using a walker? I saw Bobo Brazil lose to Pat
Patterson in the late 60's in for the NWA U.S. title around 1970.
Patterson was wearing a mask at the time, and stuffed some type of object
in the mask and headbutted Brazil. Whatever it was, it made Patterson
look like a unicorn, and Brazil got his head split open. BTW, I had a
picture of "Pretty Boy" Pat Patterson, resplendent in sequined gown and
cigarette holder, circa late 50's.

How old is Roberts? And after further thought, I would guess that
Kevin Sullivan is possibly older than Roberts.

Although they were born twenty years apart, Marty Jannetty wrestles like he
was Inoki's age. ;-)

I would hardly call Loch Ness an "active" wrestler. He was pretty
inactive, if you remember his performances in WCW.

NOTICE TAPE TRADERS!

I've lost touch with some of my traders.

<sigh>

Anyway, I've got Galavision Lucha Libre, and am lookin'
to trade for All Japan Women, All Japan and New Japan.
I'm also open to suggestions...

I tape BOTH the Galavision Saturday and Monday
Night Shows directly from cable myself and make
the dubs. High quality stuff. I just finished
making Tape One (six hours) for June and will
have six more hours completed on Saturday (June 6).

Interested? E-mail me, let's make a deal.

P.S. I also get all the Sumo Tournaments direct from Japan
usually 2 to 3 weeks after the fact. I'm lookin' to trade those
too for those who're interested...

Depending of couse on your criteria for "active" it would be easy... the
Shiek... He did a show in Japan last year, and may have done other
appearances since, and I belive he is in his mid 70's ! Carlos Colon is
another, and OX Baker was still active in some indies a few years ago, but I
haven't heard anything about him recently.

A couple of others worth mentioning:
Bobo Brazil- Last I heard he still gets in tnhe ring every so
often. In fact, he and the Sheik were still going at like
their epic feuds of years gone by.

Lou Thesz- I read in one of the "markazines" that Lou still
works out in the ring a couple times a week and that he
took a match against Masa Chono a few years ago. Granted.
it was only an exhibition match and he lost, but he's in
his 80's!

Actually, the Sheik isn't going strong ... or even at all. He suffered a heart
attack shortly after his last in-ring appearance (with FMW about a year ago)
and hasn't wrestled since, though he occasionally "manages" his legit nephew
Sabu.

For guys who actually get into the ring on a regular basis, Abdullah the
Butcher is the oldest (at 60), and Shohei Baba is close behind at 58.
