Never heard of Saba Simba?

No. Not at all. I don't think a street thug who gives the black power
sign at the end of his match stereotypical.

Me to, it's a mix between Rick Martel and J.T. Smith(Long live the
F.B.I.!!!!). But the other gimmicks(except for Porteau) pretty much
suck.

Which black wrestlers have had stereotypical gimmicks? Can't say Ahmed
Johnson, he has no gimmick! Tony Atlas, Rocky Johnson? I don't think

they had gimmicks at all. Virgil, he was a bodyguard, thats not a bad

you forget the Luger/Simmons/Harley Race angle apparantly, but that's
ok. you were too busy thinking about all those rascist things Vince has
done, right?

i think Ron Simmons will enter the WWF as....Ron Simmons. maybe an added
nickname a la Stone Cold Steve Austin, but Ron Simmons is too recognizable
a face. it's been years since Vince gave us Tony Atlas as Saba Simba and
we have to stop giving him flack for giving known wrestlers ridiculous
gimmicks. he's gotten better at that. Johnny Gunn becomes Salvatore the
fake italain and Tony Anthony becomes the plumber (which isn't too
bad...gotta love the voice) because while i may know who Johnny Gunn and
Tony Anthony are and you may, they aren't household names. Tony Anthony
may have done just fine in the WWF as the Dirty White Boy, but try to make
Johnny Gunn anything but a jobber as Johnny Gunn.

Ron Simmons couldn't draw heat with matches. Without Butch Reed
he was a snoozer. Without juice, he had Dusty's "B" cups. He bombed
in ECW. Maybe Vince will make him a 1930's railroad porter.

Neither JYD nor Koko B. Ware were WWF-created gimmicks. Both were using
the same gimmicks for years in the indies and UWF before entering WWF,
and continued with the same gimmicks after leaving. If the wrestlers
themselves have no problems with playing the roles they played, and
both had large followings of black fans, what's the big deal?

Koko B. Ware never used the birdman gimmick until he got to the WWF.

Well, the question was whether it was racist for Vince to use "black
stereotype characters" such as Koko B. Ware. Whether Vince embellished
the character by having him bring Frankie ringside with him before
matches, Koko essentially was the same character before going to WWF.
Koko still uses the "Birdman" gimmick today in the indies, which leads me
to believe that Vince didn't create the gimmick, because he usually licenses
all WWF created gimmicks for exclusive use by Titan. But anyway, I could
almost swear that KBW used the same bit, sans Frankie, in Mid-South/UWF
before arriving in WWF. He used the "bird" theme music, flapped him arms,
and the whole bit. And by no means is the character a racist stab at black
people, as some seem to imply.

The one cool thing I remember reading in PWI (the mark mag) was a
suggestion that "Simba" stood for See I'm Making Bucks Again!
