Wrestler Killed in Ring
by KEVIN GRAY
Union Leader Staff

LINCOLN - Mark Mendlan, a professional wrestler for an independent federation
known as the UWF, died tragically Thursday morning as a result of severe neck
and head injuries from a match the night before.

Mendlan, who wrestled as Kid Gorgeous, laid motionless in the ring for several
minutes after being dropped on his head by his opponent. The move, known as a
gorilla press slam, is meant to drop the opponent on his back, but Mendlan fell
awkwardly. He was rushed to Webster Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced
dead early Thursday morning.

Mendlan's opponent, Ben Alcorn, who wrestles under the alias of Dudeman, was
wrestling in just his first professional match. He had wrestled matches in his
backyard for years and made UWF officials aware of this. He had recieved less
than 3 weeks of training.

"It's easy for us to point fingers in a situation like this," said Joseph Reed,
commisioner of the UWF. "There is always a risk no matter how experienced the
wrestlers are. No one could have predicted this." Alcorn could not be reached
for comment.

Mendlan, who was only 20 years old, started out much like Alcorn. He had been
wrestling matches in his backyard with his friends since he was 12 years old.
At 18, Mendlan went to Reed for training and soon after made his professional
debut for the UWF.

Reed said he plans to put together a memorial show for Mendlan in late June or
early July. He also said he will be putting the UWF on hold, but would not
speculate when and if it would resume.

You have to fuck up to land on your head off of a Press Slam.. Damn, that's
just stupid.

Further, in a press slam, aren't you supposed to land on your stomach
and not your back like the article says?

I guess his career didn't go long enough for him to be known as Kid

There's always a risk in crossing the street but it doesn't give me license to
send a kid out into oncoming traffic.

Any lowlife who would book a wrestler for matches after less than 3 weeks of
training deserves to be run.

A memorial show???? The promoter is guilty of negligent homicide!! The only
memorial I want to see is this Joseph Reed being sent up the river.

Agreed: First, it isn't directly a "backyard wrestling" death, but a death
in a professional promotion (or one that claimed to be.) 3 weeks of training
professionally is also slim in my book.

This was an accident and had nothing to
do with backyard wrestling. The match was a
UWF match and the guy was hired and given
some training.
