That time of year is fast approaching! Starting in October, the r.s.p-w
Year-End Awards will once again be filling the newsgroups with calls for
nominations, pleas to vote, and other sundry assorted spams. :) With that
in mind, I'm "priming the pump" by including the list of the past eight
years' worth of results. Please start to think about who you'd like to
see taking the most coveted of online awards (well, just MODO) this year!

Please also note that I'm making a few changes to the awards - all the NA/
non-NA stuff is gone. I strongly encourage someone on the newsgroups to
pick up the banner and run a Japan-only set of awards if you miss these
subcategories - I'll offer any technical assistance I can, as I am sure
would Herb if asked.

Also, by popular demand, I've added a JttS category for '98, and changed
"Best/Worst Manager" to "Best/Worst Second" in the interests of accuracy.

With all that said, read on for a slice of r.s.p-w history...

The R.s.p-w (rec.sport.pro-wrestling) Year-End Achievement Awards are an
Internet tradition dating back to 1990. The Awards recognize both
excellence and...well, whatever the opposite of 'excellence is...in the
sport of professional wrestling.

The first six years of the Awards were run by Herb Kunze
(hek...@math.uwaterloo.ca - address soon to change!). In 1996, Herb
bowed out and called for volunteers, and I stepped in.

Each year's awards cover a one year period from November to November. The
most recent awards for 1997 covered a period from 11/2/96 to 11/1/97. The
upcoming awards will cover 11/2/98 to 11/1/98.

Okay, being the unenlightened soul that I am, I have included NOTHING
from the elite Japanese promotions.

Best Wrestler
Award Description:
To be given to the athlete who was the best overall wrestler of the
year. This includes all facets of wrestling: workrate, technical
ability, interviews, charisma, value to his/her promotion, etc. In 1994,
this award was split into three: North American, Non-North American, and
overall. In 1998, it was recombined into one.

1. Shawn Michaels
2. Chris Benoit
3. Chris Jericho
-----------------------------------------------

Best Tag Team
Award Description:
To be given to the tag team who were the best overall team of the year.
This includes all facets of wrestling: workrate, technical ability,
interviews, charisma, hot team moves, value to their promotion, etc. In
1994, this award was split into three: North American, Non-North
American, and overall. In 1998, it was recombined into one.

1. New Age Outlaws
2. Dancing Fools
3. Headbangers
-----------------------------------------------

Best Heel
Award Description:
To be given to the person who was the best villain this past year. This
person should bring out the fans' wrath. Match quality is not paramount
here; this award should be based primarily on how over the wrestler was
in the past year.

1. Hollywood Hogan
2. Vince McMahon
3. Eric Bischoff
-----------------------------------------------

Best Babyface
Award Description:
To be given to the person who best portrayed the hero this past year.
This person should get lots of fan support. Match quality is not
paramount here; this award should be based primarily on how over the
wrestler was in the past year.

1. Goldberg
2. Austin
3. DDP
-----------------------------------------------

Best Worker
Award Description:
To be given to the wrestler with, on average, the best workrate. In
1994, this award was split into three: North American, Non-North
American, and overall. In 1998, it was recombined into one.

1. Chris Benoit
2. Shawn Michaels
3. Eddy Guerrero
-----------------------------------------------

Best Jobber
Award Description:
To be given to the Professional Loser that does an incredible job of
putting his name opponent over. Maybe the bumps that this person takes
are just that much more spectacular than other PLs. After seeing a match
with this person, you feel sorry about the punishment he/she took and
realize how good it made his/her name opponent look. In 1998, "jobbers
to the stars" (wrestlers who could get wins against other jobbers but
were mainly used as fodder for the "superstars") received their own
category.

1. Barry Horowitz
2. Roadblock
3. Brad Armstrong
-----------------------------------------------

Best Flyer (North American)
Award Description:
To be given to the wrestler who did the most and the best high-flying

American, and overall. In 1998, it was recombined into one.

1. Dean Malenko
2. Chris Benoit
3. Owen Hart
-----------------------------------------------

Best Brawler (North American)
Award Description:
To be given to the wrestler who brawled his/her way through the year
most convincingly. This award would go to Frank "Bruiser Brody" Goodish
if he were still around. In 1994, this award was split into two: North
American and Non-North American. In 1998, it was recombined.

Award Description:
To be given to the wrestler who really has little talent, but has a
large place in the spotlight nonetheless. This is a measure of how
undeserved a wrestler's push is.

-----------------------------------------------

Best Match
Award Description:
To be given to the best wrestling match you've seen this year, either
live, on TV, PPV, or in an arena, or on tape. If it took place in the
past year, it is eligible. In 1994, this award was split into three:
North American, Non-North American, and overall. In 1997, due to lack of
participation on both the NA and non-NA sides, it was recombined.

1. Austin vs. Michaels, WM14
2. Michaels vs. Undertaker, Royal Rumble
3. Mankind vs. Undertaker, Hell in the Cell
-----------------------------------------------

Best Feud
Award Description:
To be given to the feud that gave us the most heated and best wrestling
match(es) of the year. In 1994, this award was split into two: North

get over.

1. Jeff Jarrett
2. Ernest Miller
3. Bradshaw
-----------------------------------------------

Worst Babyface

booed this person, but for whatever reason the face image just didn't
get over.

to be spectacular.

I will preface this by saying that I am relatively clueless about the
Japanese product other than the few guys like Taka and Ultimo that wrestle
over here. That's why this list includes no Japanese folks--I simply
don't know enough about them. I enjoy watching Japan tapes, but frankly I
still have trouble telling the guys apart. Here are my votes as of now.
And yes, Chris, I know I'll have to post them again in October.

With Shawn Michaels out of the picture for most of this past year, the
closest thing we have right now to a "total package" of mike skills,
workrate, technical ability, and ability to incite a crowd is CHRIS
JERICHO. Had Austin not been injured in that Owen Hart match last year
(or was it two years ago?) he'd be right up there.

> Best Tag Team

Probably not a widespread conviction, but I'm still partial to the
HEADBANGERS (current Maryland Championship Wrestling titleholders) and am
sorry they are not being used to their fullest by the WWF. Yes, I work
with MCW; but I'd be saying the same thing were I not familiar with their
indie work.

This one's the no-brainer for me: ROCKY MAIVIA by a big margin.

STEVE AUSTIN, and this old timer here is still scratching his head about
Austin's "faceness" after getting that classic heel buildup.

> Best Worker
CHRIS BENOIT

> Best Jobber
JERRY FLYNN

> Best Flyer (North American)
The recently-rejuvenated XPAC, who I just finished watching against
Jarrett on Heat. He's finally overcome those injuries and is right back
up to where he was during his Lightning Kid days.

> Best Technical Wrestler
Tie: DEAN MALENKO and CHRIS BENOIT. I can't decide.

> Best Brawler (North American)
MICK FOLEY, as CACTUS JACK and MANKIND (but not as DUDE LOVE)

> To be given to the wrestler you like the most, regardless of the reason.

Right now I'd have to say that I enjoy watching CHRIS JERICHO more than I
enjoy watching anyone else.

ROCKY MAIVIA--remember that a year and a half ago nobody really cared
about him. He's worked hard to make us hate him.

HULK HOGAN--need I explain why?

STEVE AUSTIN-SHAWN MICHAELS, but it seems oh, so long ago

> Worst Wrestler
Well, unless you consider Warrior's recent "killer farts" to be
"wrestling", I guess he's disqualified from consideration. So the award
goes once more to HULK HOGAN.

> Worst Tag Team
THE TRUTH COMMISSION

> Worst Heel
MARK HENRY, just because he's being pushed as a major heel long before
he's really ready. (But then again, when WCW pushed Goldberg as a major
face long before he was really ready, it worked [shrug])

Now that he's back and knocking out the Giant with his deadly fart gas,
it's gotta be WARRIOR

JACKYL. He personally shone in spite of being saddled with that awful
Truth Commission gimmick. Just as he was about to hit his stride with a
gimmick that worked, WWF takes the gimmick from him and gives it to Sable

> Best Announcer
After all these years, it's still JIM ROSS

I'm partial to JIM CORNETTE. I just wish he'd be used on more than just
"Shotgun"

CHRIS JERICHO. The best in a long, long while.

VINCE McMAHON as the evil boss out to screw STEVE AUSTIN out of his

WWF, for the simple reason that they don't have Hulk Hogan working for them.

I liked SUMMER SLAM, perhaps because it's most recent in my memory bank.

Same as best angle--the establishment of the "evil Vince" character turned
a big negative (the Bret fallout) into a big positive.

Hmmm. How long was Dusty around this year? Is he still eligible

The re-creation of the "Dubba J" character for Jeff Jarrett, after it
didn't work the first time. It didn't work the second time, either.
Finally, the post-haircut Jarrett seems to have found a niche for a guy
who is really a talented wrestler.

That promotion in Virginia/Carolina run by the Woody Brothers. I never
saw it, but I've heard so many stories about it, I'll avoid it at all

For me, Owen Hart (even though I know nobody will agree).

Benoit, before his injury a couple of months ago, was wrestling almost

You could say Benoit, since all last year he was used to get everybody

D-Lo Brown has come a long way considering he what he was last year.
Venis had high expectations coming in which he didn't meet at first. But
if you were to say last year at this time that D-Lo would be wearing the
Euro belt (same Euro title that the near MYTHICAL Shawn Micheals was
wearing at that time) in about a year, I would have called you crazy.

Tanaka vs. Awesome. As evidence I present a snip of Dean Rasmussen's
Death Valley Driver Video Review:

Masato Tanaka vs. Mike Awesome (8/2/98): (Ripper) We will end this
debate before we get started: THIS match is the best match from ECW's
Heatwave 98. Not the Shinzaki/Haybusa vs Van Dam/Sabu match. Don't
believe what Scott Keith or the Lariat says. That match had the typical
components of a Sabu match (clutching and grabbing), a Shinzaki match (a
batch of stalling) and a Van Dam match (even more exposing the
business). Spotfest Central was entertaining but not the best match on
the card. Tanaka/Awesome was great with actual wrestling and one CRAZY
CRAZY bump that was setup superbly. You can't really give Tanaka the
credit he deserves but the words "Insanely Great" keep coming to mind.
Meanwhile Awesome (aka The Gladiator) continues to prove that he is the
best wrestler from North America you've never heard of. The match has
it all. See Tanaka run a 4.6 forty to deliver a chairshot. Watch the
295 pound Awesome do a hesitation slingshot clothesline. These two
waffle each other and then things really kick into gear. Tanaka takes
four horrific chair shots that absolutely wraps the chair around his
head. Eventually, Awesome sets up a table outside. The whole point is
that Awesome powerbombed Tanaka through the table in Queens and now he
is going for it again. Well he tries twice and Tanaka keeps escaping.
On the second one, Tanaka counters with an elbow and then drops Awesome
through the table with a powerbomb on his own. This is beyond sick as
Awesome goes HEAD AND NECK first through the table and straight to the
floor. Remember when Sasuke cracked his skull open? That looks like
merely a flesh wound compared to this. Tanaka covers for the cover
which Awesome somehow kicks out of. He also kicks out from the Roaring
Elbow. Tanaka finally decides enough is enough and kills Mr. Awesome
dead with a spinning DDT onto two chairs. Dead. Right in the middle of
the ring. This match was all about being as entertaining as humanly
possible.

I could have said it better. Really. ;)

>23. Most Deteriorated- TIE Austin/Sting

Have to disagree with you on this one. Sting and Austin both can put on real
decent matches still. Davey Boy, Vader, Mero all 3 used to put on real good
matches, but over the past year, none of them have put on one match that I have
enjoyed.

Maybe I'm bias for I am still, and always will be the ultimate Sting mark. :)

Look what you started CRZ!!!!

The Sax's two cents are thrown in below:

Best Wrestler :

Austin is the given for the year. But, after him, it gets tricky. Best all
around wrestler in `98 after Austin has to be The ROCK. After him, I'd have to
go with Hogan...*ducks the flames* Just because of one basis of the "Best
Wrestler" category: "Value to the promotion." WCW would've folded by now if not
for Hogan...and hey, at least he defended his title this year.

1. Austin
2. The ROCK
3. Hogan

Best Tag Team:

NAO are gonna take it this year...simply because of a lack of competition.
The WWF's tag team talent pool has twindled and WCW's was non-existent for most
of the year.

1. NAO
2. Too Much
3. The Dancin' Fools

Best Heel:

Here is where it gets tough. Jericho or The ROCK? I take the ROCK on sheer
laughability...but it's close due to jericho's fights with midgets.

1. the ROCK
2. Jericho
3. Buff Bagwell

Best Babyface

You and I both know Austin will win this. But, after him, it's
Goldberg...then what? HBK? HHH? No...

1. Austin
2. Goldy
3. DDP

Best Worker

No explanation here. I'm biased.

1. Benoit
2. Malenko
3. HBK

Best Jobber

See above

1. Togo
2. Horrowitz
3. Brooklyn Brawler (He did one match, and that qualifies him)

Best Flyer (North American)

1. Kidman
2. TAKA
3. Foley (The "flying is just falling with style" arguement)

Best Technical Wrestler

1. Owen
2. Benoit
3. Bret

Best Brawler (North American)

1. Foley
2. Austin
3. Saturn(He got WCW to do a DVD Table spot...good enough for me)

Most Favourite Wrestler
