The PPV started with WWE promoting pipe smoking.

1. Matt Hardy over Mark Henry in 9:00

I don't think anyone expected Matt to lose; short title reigns don't
help anyone. I sort of expected there to be interference from Tony
Atlas (which would either backfire or get flagged by the ref) that
allowed Matt to keep the title. Nothing special. Lawler said he
was in Mark Henry's first WWE match (which must have been 12-13
years ago).

MATCH RATING: $0.25

Eve interviewed Triple H and Jeff Hardy back stage. Meh.

RATING: $0.00

2. Beth Phoenix over Candice Michelle in 4:00

Candy didn't flub as many spots as she has in the first few matches
after coming back. She looks to be close to how she was progressing
in getting better in the ring before her (first) injury.

MATCH RATING: $1.00

Kane babbled about Rey backstage.

RATING: $0.00

3. Rey over Kane in 11:00

Rey seemed to miss a lot of spots, and clocked Kane in the face with
his knee brace at one point. Non-finish came when Rey dove off the
top to the outside but Kane caught him and then beaned him with a
chair for the DQ. Rey called three refs over and said "Paul, I can't
feel my legs". Isn't that the same thing Vince said the last time
we saw him? I expect next PPV Kane will unmask Rey and it'll turn
out that it's been Vince under the mask all these years.

MATCH RATING: $0.60

MVP wanted to see Vickie, but when he knocked on her door, he was
looking up at the top of it (as if Vickie were seven feet tall) so
there was no surprise when Big Show opened the door instead. Meh.

MVP came to the ring and cut a sub-par (for him) promo. He was
interrupted by Randy Orton, who didn't make the bit any less
uninteresting. Ted, Cody, and Manu(re) came out. The crowd had
enough of the non-wrestling and started a "boring" chant. Cody said
Orton is like the guy who returns to high school after graduation
acting cool because it's all he's got. But Orton didn't return to
high school; he joined the armed forces until he went AWOL.

Orton left. MVP babbled on some more and then left the ring. Punk
and Kofi met him at the top of the ramp and said "there's three of
them and three of us--let's get 'em!" Face turn for MVP? The three
ran to the ring, but only MVP went in (and got beat up by the three
heels). After a bit, Punk/Kofi went in the ring and beat up Team
Nepotism.

RATING: $0.20 (mostly for Punk and Kofi)

4. Batista over JBL in 6:00

There were a lot of rest holds for a six-minute match, including two
spots with Dave shaking the ropes like a retarded Warrior, and two
spots with Dave thrusting his knee into the air between JBL's knees
which is somehow supposed to hurt.

MATCH RATING: $0.05

JBL continued to sell the beating as he was still sprawled on the
mat, but asked for a microphone. He started cutting a promo, slowly
standing up over the course of three or four minutes. Best JBL
promo of the last five years. Easily. "I want to thank you and our
wonderful Congress for shelling out billions and billions of dollars
so that people like me an keep all of our money. Because my good
friends Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi understand that people like me
make the world go round. And I employ people like you. And the good
of the company is what's good for me. Saving my money may cost you
ten thousand dollars per household based on my projections, but I
want to thank you, I want to thank Sen. Obama, I want to thank Sen.
McCain." Cryme Tyme appeared on the big screen (in something that
was probably pre-taped last Monday). They stole JBL's limo, filled
it with divas (and Sgt Slaughter, for some reason). Mickie James
popped out the top of the limo saying "money money yeah yeah"
(proving it wasn't a horse-drawn carriage).

RATING: $1.25 (mostly for JBL's in-ring promo)

5. Big Show over Taker in 10:00

Not much of a match. The ref stopped it after repeated blows to
Taker by Show. The only way it could have ben saved would have been
a tombstone piledriver or copious amounts of blood (which we
probably won't see with the new TV-PG rating).

MATCH RATING: $0.20

6. HHH over Jeff Hardy in 17:00

"It's all about McCain, and how you play him..." This match turned
out better than I expected. The highlight was Jeff taking a
flat-back bump over the top to the outside. HHH countered a
Tygress... er... Fyre... no... Whisper in the Wind into a
spinebuster. He later hit the WitW, a Swanton, and a Twist of Fate,
but HHH reversed the pin. One of the better non-gimmick matches of
Jeff's recent past. HHH worked well with him, and sold for the
moves except for the finish. Like I said--it exceeded expectations.
I was pleasantly surprised they didn't go with the cop-out Russian
guy run-in non-finish.

MATCH RATING: $2.00

HHH ran into Arn Anderson and then Russian Guy backstage. Meh

RATING: $0.00

7. Jericho over Shawn Michaels in 22:00

I was surprised that they didn't come up with any new ladder spots.
Jericho forgot to protect himself early in the match when HBK was
late for a teeter-totter spot and Jericho chipped a tooth. They
tried a double-dive off a ladder on the outside to the announcers
table, but slid off of it after it collapsed. The highlight was
Jericho near the top of a ladder in the ring being thrown over the
top rope, where he did a good job of selling a knee injury. Not
nearly as good as the Dutt/Machismo ladder match from last month,
which surprised me, given the caliber of athletes in tonight's
match.

MATCH RATING: $3.10

WWE price of the PPV: $??.??

I spent $0.00 in gas and $0.00 on food, so by that token I got my
money's worth.

Best WWE PPV since Mania, but still on the low end of the list of
all PPVs I've ever seen.
