In an ongoing effort to rip off Doug Corti whenever I can, I
humbly present to you the '98 Savios awards for Shotgun Saturday
Night and its various international forms.

Best Match:

1. Hardy Boyz vs. Too Much - this went like seven minutes, and was
a high spot bananza. Really showed off these two teams potentials, and
we saw the Hardys swank finishing manuever for only the second time,
and the SUNSET FLIP BOMB~ which almost killed Jeff Hardy. A quintissential
example of the coolness of Shotgun.

2. TAKA~ Michinoku vs. Fallen Angel (September) - This was a clinic
on how to put on a good five minute match. Chris Davis goes nutso,
pulling out leaping pedigrees and slingshot jackhammers. TAKA~ also
rules it, and gets one of his last 3 wins of '98.

3. Val Venis vs. Bob Holly - Just a good, long (by Shotgun standards)
match. Even, good pacing, and about 7 minutes of non-stop action.
I even thought ol' PJ had a chance for a while ther.

Honorable Mention - Headbangers vs. JESUS~/Jose, Togo/Funaki vs.
Chirs Davis and some guy I forgot.

Worst Match:

1. Kaientai vs. Acolytes - This is why I hate the WWF.

2. Marc Mero vs. Godfather - a short, incredibly offensive to anyone
with a brain, comedy match.

3. Too Much vs. Oddities - Because I hate seeing talanted guys getting
squashed by fat idiots.

Best Shotgun:

1. September 19, 1998 - Brian Christopher vs. Val Venis, Scorpio vs,
D'Lo Brown, TAKA~ vs. Fallen Angel, and a 24-man Battle Royale. I'll
forigve the Dustin/Droz atrocity.

2. From July - it had PAPI CHULO~ vs. Val Venis and Pierre vs. Edge,
both cool matches. And, the last Shotgun appearance of OUR SAVIOR,
SAVIO~!

3. From October - the only two matches were TAKA~/Funaki and
Too Much/Hardy Boys.

Worst Shotgun:

1. The crapload from a few weeks ago - DOA vs. NAO, Tiger Ali Singh
vs. Goldust, and Kaientai getting massacred by the Acolytes.

2. Anyone with a Vader squash.

3. Anyone with a Faarooq squash.

Best Moment:

1. Seeing PAPI CHULO~ whip ass in a match (w/ Steve Casey) vs. Kaientai,
busting out a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, and a SWANK backdrop/tope
con hilo.

2. Kaientai CHEATING TO WIN~ (or at least a DQ) against DOA.

Worst Moment:

1. After the TAKA/Funaki match, realizing that was the last time a member
of Kaientai would get a pinfall victory.

2. Seeing the LOD "wrestle" the Los Boricuas back in April.

3. Tiger Ali Singh made a guy eat Babu's booger.

Okay, this week's shows:

Shotgun-
EDGE (w/ old music, inner rage, w/o the Brood) vs. BUDDY WAYNE - For
some reason, Edge gets his old entrance music and comes through the
crowd. Edge hits a drop kick, two rolling snap suplexes chained together
with a reverse Falcon Arrow, but misses a diving headbutt. Wayne gets
up top for a missile drop kick, but Edge just walks out of range. Edge
then takes it with what Cole and Cornette called the "Inner Fury"
(inverted Electric Chair). Call it .50 for an entertaining squash.

DOA (w/ bikes, w/o Ellering) vs. TOO SEXY BRIAN CHRISTOPHER and
KEVIN QUINN (w/ Too Hot Scott Taylor) - Scottie too hottie does commentary
and explains his injury, while Cole asks him what he got Brian for Christmas.
Standard "LHWs get token offense against huge, useless balls of crap"
match ensues, with Quinn doing a weak Taylor impression. Quinn and Christopher
get a double hiptoss, but DOA are running the show. QUinn hits his knee
on a Stinger Splash attempt, which leads to DOA peral harboring his knee.
The DQ then comes, and Brian carries Quinn out the back (like he does to
Taylor). THe plot thickens...

Super Astros-
I can't do much of a report becuase I didn't tape it, but this week was
pretty cool, with FUNAKI~ showing off his skills in a loss to Armando
Fernandez, and Papi Chulo taking on Buddy Wayne (yes that Buddy Wayne).
Those were both cool, and then El Merenguero (aka Jesus Castillo) got
punked by Apollo Dantes. This show is actually turning in to something
kinda cool. Check it out if you can.

So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have?
ALBERT B. CHING, or Jesus, who is named Christ?

I haven't chimed in on the yearend Worldwide and I wouldn't have on
this because "Me too" posts aren't ontopic in the mod group and reall
you guys did such a great job summing up the year there wasn't much
more to be said than me too, but...

The Worst Shotgun was the one before Wrestlemania which was a 1 hour
no matches infomercial.

And it's sad to see Shotgun and Worldwide turn into 80% replay shows.

No compromise.

I liked your picks, but D-Lo vs TAKA has a special place in my heart. TAKA bumped
his ASS off for D-Lo's cool offense (including a sick suplex from the apron to the
floor) and the Ski-Hi finisher was -m-a-s-s-i-v-e-! The commentators were even
putting over the fact that D-Lo has two legit finishers (after he frog splashed
Funaki post-match). The match went about 6 minutes and had enough TAKA offense
that you cant call it a squash (even if there was no doubt about the winner), so I
dug it big time.

reverse Falcon Arrow? You could call it that, but I think it has more in common
with the Arn Anderson gourdbuster (as Cornette, I think, mentioned). I'd say it's
gourdbuster + tiger driver = gourddriver!

I guess if you cant do your finisher well, just grab another one. I was never a
fan of Edge's Downward Spiral. Kanyon and Nova do it much better. But "Inner
Fury"? Come on! That name would only be cool if it was some odd mistranslation
from Japanese.

i second that emotion. I now wish I had taken Spanish in high school so i could
figure out the intricacies of the Max Mini/Chyna angle.
