The WAWLI Papers are dedicated to the history of professional wrestling and,
particularly, to the halcyon years from World War I to the late 1960s when,
first, Ed (Strangler) Lewis and, then, Lou Thesz, were the premier drawing
cards and true "champions" of this rough-and-tumble hippodrome. Look for
articles, however, that span the more than 130 years from the American Civil
War to the present, as catch-as-catch-can wrestling evolved from a variety of
styles to capture the imagination of the sporting public in the United States
and, eventually, the entire world.
Submissions of clippings from old newspaper and magazine articles are always
welcome, as are original articles. For publication, send them to:

DID YOU KNOW?
(L.I.W.A. newsletter, September, 1993)
By Matt Langley
--Mae Weston was the only American to hold the Japanese ladies title and was
once shot after a match in Birmingham while working as Ma Bass?
--Mae Young was the inaugural Florida State ladies champion in 1954 while
working for Cowboy Luttrall?
--Ella Waldek held the very same belt 20 years later? (When Ella wrestled at
the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1972 the caliber of wrestling
was good enough to charge $20 for the front-row seats.)
--Gladys (Killem) Gillem not only wrestled ladies (men on many occasions,
too!) but she tamed lions and rassled alligators?
--Gladys Gillem and Mae Weson once got into a scuffle on a moving train?
--There is a sign in Gladys Gillem's front yard in Pensacola, Fla., that
reads: "WELCOME -- GLADYS STILL LIVES HERE"?

IN MEMORY OF BETTY JO HAWKINS
(L.I.W.A. newsletter, September, 1993)
By Belle Starr
Betty Jo Hawkins was born October 22, 1930 and was a native of Ashland,
Kentucky. Later, her family moved to Columbus, Ohio, where Betty Jo continued
her education and graduated from Sacred Heart School of Business.
After battling a severe bout with polio at the age of 17 she was told she
would never walk without crutches.
Betty started her wrestling career in 1950 after a long hard struggle and
severe training.
In 1952 Betty Joe was one of the top lady wrestlers in the country.
In 1956 she held the Southern State Championship along with winning the
Florida State Championship. In late 1956 and early 1957 Betty Joe also held
one half of the Canadian Tag Team Championship in Alberta.
In 1959, Betty married the famous Canadian wrestler, Jim (Brute) Bernard, and
in 1960 her son, Tony Prudhomme, was born and of whom Betty was very proud.
Her husband died in July, 1984.
She had a great love for animals and filled her surroundings with cats, dogs,
goats and horses.
Betty Joe died December 4, 1987 from congestive heart failure after battling
years with a serious case of rheumatoid arthritis.
Betty Jo will always be remembered by her friends and fans. But what she left
us most was her laughter, her sense of humor and above all she would never
complain of the pain she was in.
Betty Joe, we love you and miss you.
(The Ladies International Wrestling Association meets annually every June in
Las Vegas. This year's convention will be the 15th such gathering.)

(ED. NOTE -- The above results, and the subsequent three years' worth that
will appear in The WAWLI Papers Nos. 419 and 420, are the handiwork of demon
researcher Steve Yohe of Montebello, Calif. This guy has done wonders with the
excavation of long buried Los Angeles-area wrestling history, dating back
practically to the turn of the century. He is so highly regarded in wrestling
circles that, every time Scott Hall climbs into a WCW ring and gets a mike in
his hand, he salutes Steve by hollering, "Hey, Yohe!")
