PITTSFIELD, M.A.-Conrad Mainwaring, former Olympian, a track coach,
and camp counselor at Camp Greylock, pleaded guilty to sexually
molesting children on Thursday.
The crimes Mainwaring is accused of dates back to the 1970's and
victims in court Thursday were able to see him admit to the charges,
repeating the word "guilty " to more than 12 counts.
Mainwaring's sentence will run a minimum of 11 years with three
years probation after where he is required to register as a sex
offender in Massachusetts.
Honorable Judge Agostini presided over the plea, and said in court
given Mainwaring's age, 72 years old, this will most likely be a
life sentence.
Agostini also ruled, Mainwaring will not be allowed to contact any
of the victims or minors.
"Child molesters are cunning, calculated criminals who prey on the
most vulnerable members of our communities," said Berkshire District
Attorney Timothy Shugrue. "The Defendant used his status as a
successful athlete and position of power to abuse countless
adolescent boys. Again and again, the Defendant isolated and abused
victims with similar profiles, in similar manner and in similar
circumstances. Without question, Conrad Mainwaring is a serial child
molester."
The charges involve 9 male victims, many spoke during victim impact
statements describing the pain they still live with decades after
they were molested by Conrad, and believe there are more than 400
victims spanning over 2 continents for 50 years.
Some boys were groomed as early as 11 years old and were as young as
13 and as old as 19 when the abuse began.
The District Attorney read out the horrifying details of the cases
and what the young boys at Camp Greylock went through like being
abused in the woods, in a van or various other places around the
camp.
Mainwaring faced 12 counts of indecent assault and battery of a
child over 14 years of age and four counts of indecent assault and
battery of children under 14.
The case began after a 2019 ESPN report found more than 50 men
alleged abuse against Mainwaring.
Mainwaring was a hurdler in the 1976 Olympics, victims say he used
his Olympic credentials as part of his manipulative tactics to
convince boys what he was doing to them would turn them into elite
athletes.
Victims say Mainwaring's abuse followed for years while at Syracuse
University, and Los Angeles.
Civil suits are being pursued against Syracuse University and
against Camp Greylock.
