Well, if we're still talking gymnastics, then my vote goes to Amanda
Borden, the main reason I could put up with John Tesh's commentary.
She's a very overlooked cutie!

Who should get the gold for hunk/babe of the games?

At the moment gymnasts seem to be popular, with America's Shannon
Miller and Russia's "Iceman," Alexei Nemov in medal contention.
This judge awards high marks to Canadian swimmer Joanne Lamar,
however (didn't medal in the pool, unfortunately!).

I'd like to second that Winter Olympics nomination for "the Boss":
Johann Olav Koss rules. Talk about having it all: brains, beauty,
super well-developed body *and* social conscience, multiple medals *and*
a heart of gold. I guess he does qualify for the current Olympic
Betties 'n Baldwins contest, since he's been doing all that fundraising
in Atlanta for his children's foundation.

Now I just don't know about that. I think she looks a little, well...
different. Of the gymnasts, I think Podkopayeva (Sp?) and Chow are
better.

Everyone talks about Nemov as the hunk of Olympics, how about another
Russian? The swimmer Alexander Popov, gold medal in both 50 and 100
freestyle. He looks like a greek god. Come to think of it, lot of
Russian athletes are drop dead gorgeous, remember the tragically died
young figure skater Sergei Grinkov?

So hard to choose... :)

Vitaly Scherbo is still a hunk (Nemov too)...in fact, ALL of those male
gymnasts are hunks - literally. There's also a Russian (or former
Soviet) weightlifter whose name I can't recall - Pirov? Popov? short
last name, starts with a P - who was pretty good lookin'.

I can't really comment on women athletes that men would find attractive,
but Mary Onyali, the Nigerian runner, is very pretty and so of course is
Dominique Dawes. I would imagine that guys would go for some members of the
American women's swim team, too.

However, and this is very catty of me I know, I was watching women's
diving and could not figure out WHICH of them I found to be more
UNattractive.

Female: Svetlana Chorkina is gorgeous, as is Dominique Dawes. It's hard
to tell with the swimmers, because they are always seen with swim caps
on, and we haven't gotten much of a look at anyone else.

Male: Preferring the more mature male, I find Carl Lewis very
attractive. (None of the male gymnasts do much for me...)

Kind of a lame thing to be talking about, but I'm due for a little "lighthearted"
banter. Being a guy, my vote so far goes to two women I saw last
night: the Bulgarian rhythmic gymnast (name?) and Vera Ilyina, the
Russian 3 meter platform diver who finished first in last night's

Lots of votes for gymnasts, I see. Let me put in another "general"
vote for women high and long (and triple?) jumpers. Well some of them
anyway. Too bad Heike Henkel (GER) is not in the high jump (has she
retired?), but watch out for Hanne Haugland (NOR). Yes I'm from NOR

too, so I may be biased. :-)

Oh, and Merlene Ottey isn't bad either. I hope she'll get her
"revenge" on the 200m.

Of course, it's the *performance* of the athletes which is and should
be in focus, not their looks.

As for the men: well I don't care.... You might want to check out
Geir Moen (NOR, again I'm biased :-) in the 200m. The 1994 European
champion hasn't done so well this season, but he did (barely) qualify
for Round 2 today. (In the final: Go Frankie - beat Michael! :-)

My mother has a weak spot for Linford Christie, though I can't say I
understand why.

My thoughts:
1. Troy Dumais (he placed third in the Olympic trials for diving, therefore

Guys
1. Troy Dumais (Adonis, but missed the Olympics, due to third place at
diving trials)
1. Alexei Namov (That face, that body, that smile, ohhhh)
2. Gary Hall Jr. (Great bod, great smile, ok hair, nice eyes, bad voice tone)

2. Michelle Smith (I love her hair and her eyes)
3. Lila Podkopayeva (a simplicity kind of pretty)

Lilia Podkopayeva, funny choice, I reckon little Moceanu is the nicest

And what's so odd about that is that he, like all the other male gymnasts,

We got the same taste, buddy. I'll also add Shannon Miller, Lilia

Fu Mingxia, Becky Ruehl (what a smile), and of course, Gabriela

Well, it is true that most gymnasts, male or female, are rather
short in person. However, Nemov, like his female counterpart Svetlana
Khorkina, is unusally tall for gymnasts. He is about 5' 8". Although not
up to your 6' 0" standard, compared to the All Around Champion Li Xiaoshuang,
who is only 5' 1", Nemov certainly stand out.

Moreover, while given their height and their muscular built, you
may expect most gymnasts look somewhat freakish in person. However, if you
pay attention to their weight, e.g. Li is 130lb only, their excellent
physique is more due to the fact that they are well proportional than
some bodybuilder type bulky mass of muscle.

But seriously:

1) Liliya Podkopayeva--she is just plain beautiful
2) Mo Huilan--what a smile
3) Gail Devers--another lady with a beautiful smile, but I can do without

4) Alison Sydor, the Canadian Mountain Biker
5) Amy Acuff, the American High Jumper--I don't think her event has

6) Marie-Jose Perec. I always did like long legs. Come to think of it,

7) Michelle Smith--being an Irishman myself I'm a sucker for green eyes

I like the Russian gymnast's Alexei Nemov's face and physique (so hard to
choose among those Russian gymnasts). And the American swimmer, Tom Dolan,
has the most beautiful eyes (check out his half-moon dive in the current
Sports Illustrated. Swimsuit Issue, indeed.) and seems like a sweet guy.
The American sprinter Michael Johnson is attractive, too, and I like his
demeanor.

I don't think Shannon Miller is ugly at all. Dominique Moceanu is too
"cutesy-pie". The Irish swimmer Michelle Smith is a good-looking kid.
Actually, of all the women athletes I've seen, I think sprinter Gail
Devers and the Chinese diver Fu Mingxia (sp?) are the best-looking. I like
how Fu seems to have a constant look of amusement on her face.

I don't care for Mark Lenzi at all. He's way too hairy. Greg Louganis may
be gay but he was hot stuff in his prime. <g>

I don't think Devers is running the 200-- would make it hard for the Bronze

Anyways, I hope she gets gold in the 200, nonetheless-- this is her last

come out of Jamaica to finally win a gold after always getting no greater than
bronze (she got silver in the 100). Go Merlene!

Karelin attractive? Well I'll let you women decide that. He's better
than the American he met in the final, though. :-)

I'm more impressed by his performances in wrestling:

- Won every possible title since 1988
- Never lost a match to a foreigner
- Carried three different flags in the opening ceremonies
(Soviet, "CIS", Russia)

At least the third one is pretty unbeatable.

Back to the subject: I renew my vote for jumpers after the women's
triple jump. Including the winner Inessa Kravets (she looked best
during the medal ceremonies when she finally put up a smile).

Really. Well, then, who do _you_ (and everyone else who is reading this)
think is the most attractive NBC Commentator? If you're not sure what
they look like I think you can find pictures of them on the NBC Olympic
page at www.olympic.nbc.com. Think "Elfie Shlegel" sounds cute but
you've never seen her? Check out the page. Bud Collins sounds like he
might be a hunk? Look him up, then smack yourself a couple of times. I
still contend that Summer Sanders wins by a mile (or, in her case, a 200

How about Annie Pelletier, the Canadian bronze medal winner?
Elizabeth Shue should play her in the movie.
As for Shannon Miller, if she is "ugly", I'd say roughly 80% of humanity is
"hideous".
My pick for babe of the games is Franzi van Almsick. I got the sense that
Costas was mighty impressed with her looks as well. And I'll just add that

The American, Melisa something, has a real nice smile. And I thought the

russian swimmer Alexandre Popov *sigh*.

I'll second Gabriella and Becky Ruehl but I'll add a new lady I have not seen mentioned,

the older Romainian who lost out on the uneven bars when the Chinese girl tied Amy. I forgot her name but
she is a definite keeper. I think they referred to her as the "Mom" to the rest of the Romainians.

how would Fabio compare? I'm still scratching my head on why women think
that Orangutang is so handsome. I think he'll come last but one.. behind
Linford Christie.

I was previously divided between Nemov and Popov but now I
am pleased to say they have been beaten hands down by a
fellow Brit.

Ben Ainslie the sailor is an absolute dream - completely
gorgeous and oozing with charm. OK so he is a bit young at
19 but hey, I could cope!

big points go to Gary Hall Jr (holy smokes), Jeff Rouse (i'm digging the
male swimmers) and Alexei Nemov (duh).
As for the women, i always thought Jaycie Phelps was pretty. hmm.

OK, let's start a new thread.

Who do you think was the most "mature and feminine" female gymnast ?

I vote for the 19 yr old Romanian (can't remember her name at the
moment). Unlike most other gymnasts, she definitely required more than
just a training bra. Her shoulders were a little big, but then again,
they had to hold up more weight ;)

I also recall seeing a few years back a Russian (well, some sort of
former Soviet) gal that had a nice hourglass figure - can't remember
her name and I didn't notice her in any of the competitions this time
(she may have been, but I just didn't notice).

Too bad the timing of this thread is not right as the swimming has
finihsed. But even then Franzi still gets a few votes.

There are quite a few attractive faces in the olympics but Franziska van
Almsick, German freestyle swimmer, is in a totally different class. Not an
American style of attractiveness though.

Too bad most of you probably have missed her, thanks to NBC's patriotic
coverage. (I had to search thru huge lengths of video tape to get a few
glimps of her.) Just walk into any international magazine store and pick
up a German magazine. Chances are she on the cover. Even Sports
Illustrated has a special on her. Alos try
<http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/4692/franzisk.htm> but the picts there
aren't that great.

Derek.

As for the 1996 Babe... I'll put in a bronze or two for Jennifer Azzi,

It might be true that the average age of the participating
gymnasts are higher than last Olympic. However, if you looked at the
winning circles of this Olympic, Podkopayeva, Amanar and Gogean are the
MAJOR winners this time and they still belong to the younger crop of
gymnasts(Okay, this is also the second Olympic for Gogean but unlike
Milosovici, she was in the team before her peak and never was a force in
Barcelona). Although Miller Dawes and Chow do have their share of the
spotlight, they are certainly overshadowed by the others unless you
watch gymnastic only in NBC point of view

No kidding, REAL sick! Infants as sex symbols? Blech!

And hey, as far as I'm concerned, all this hooplah about how sexy and
good looking one or two the Russian male gymnasts are; maybe, but bear in mind
that their well proportioned, heavily muscled bodies... are sitting atop
shrimpy, tiny, 5'2 frames. Want to be in awe of a guy with a great body,
drool over one who's at least 5'8 or so, please! heheheh what is this, Smurf
Love or something?! Betcha you ladies would look great dancing with them...
their heads barely topping out at your ribcage...
