The recall was for any 95' and 96' Sea-Doo watercraft with the 9 gallon gas tank.  This included the XP, SPX, SPI, and the SP(The GSX, GTX, and GTS had 12 and 15 gallon tanks).  The reason for the recall is where the fuel filler meets the gas tank.  The joint would develope a small crack and release gas fumes, thus resulting in explosion.  It was claimed that it was a defect, but most would agree that it occurs from too much surf riding.  The pounding a watercraft's gas tank takes in the surf is astronomical.

I got a recall notice for my '96 GTi with a 12.5 gal. tank, so the recall is
for more than just the 9 gal. tanks

Ditto - I got the recall for my 96 GTi, as well. The test didn't reveal
any problems though...

In article <352cd...@feed1.realtime.net>, Sean says...
I can't remember where I heard this information about the reason for the recall
but, I think it was the dealer who told me that the reason the gas tanks were
being replaced was because the neck of the tanks were cracking from having the
hose clamp to tight around the neck. The tools pressure was set too high at the
factory is the reason that this happened and also explains why more than one
size of tank had this happen..

I doubt you will find any 96s with problems. It's just an extra
precaution SD is taking since the 95s had problems. The 15
gallon don't have this problem. Although the tank is pressurized
by the dealer at all services to ensure there is no cracking and
all the check valves work properly.

I took my GTI in two weeks ago and it only took about an hour to perform the
pressure test and they did it while I waited. I brought it home the same day,
parked it in the yard to await a warm day.

Today I got a letter from the dealer stating that the recall service is done
and for me to come pick it up.

What the hay?

1 hr? Good low'd! Only takes about 10-15 minutes. Are they taking lunch breaks
or something in-between?

The fuel tank recall is for 1996 Sea-Doo models - SP, SPI, SPX and GTS, GTI,
It does not involve either the GSX or GTX models. Bombardier sent out
certified, registered letters to any owners of the models involved in the
recall. If you have not received a letter, your model is not affected.
Further note: very few tanks have needed replacement, most test fine.

Corey,,,,,,,,This is what I had to deal with with my service department.

Was told
A) Not sure if your boat is part of the recall ?
B) We are 3 weeks backed up right now, and it's first come first serve.

Told them
A) Frigin find out if my boat was a recall or not.
B) No way I am going to leave my boat for a Recall for 3 weeks !! No way, not
for your problem. Heck, I wouldn't even leave it for that long if it was my
problem.

I even rode with the owner on the Sunday before !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please don't tell me to try another dealer also, as I already dumped the one
where I bought the boat.

I didn't think 1 hour was so bad, considering I showed up Saturday afternoon
w/o an appointment.

It doesn't take long enough to need an appointment.

I'll vouch for this as I took mine into Corey's shop and he took no
more than 10 minutes to complete.

Thanks Corey,

Considering that I showed up without an appointment, two hours before quitting
time on a saturday intending only to drop it off and pick it up the next
weekend, out the door in one hour was damned good. I didn't even have to
unhitch.
They still have a few 97 XPs at $5400.

Three years ago I purchased a 1996 Sea Doo GTI. It had been in covered storage since at least 2003 when it was last registered. I saw it where I keep our ski boat trailer, contacted owner and made an offer. It had less than 100 hours. My brother in AZ had a similar model and told me about fuel tank recall. I contacted Sea Doo and even after all these years they had fuel tanks and paid full costs to replace tank. I paid extra $200 for new sender unit to make fuel gauge work. I also paid to change out fuel lines to alcohol safe lines. The thing runs great and is lots of fun to ride. It is like a time machine as it looks brand new 23 years later.

I'm the original owner of a 96 GTI with ~40 hours that I found the recall letter - I must have ignored in 2003. Arranging replacement now. Is there anything you would recommend besides those lines to replace?
Dealing with the back and forth between Capital One and HSBC who can do the lien release. I got one from HSBC, rejected by DMV, now Cap One says they'll send me a valid one. Mmm, financial institutions should have their act together better than this. Or, never take a short term loan which I never have since!
