Foothill Ranch, Calif. -- Heading south to another popular Florida
venue after opening the season in Titusville, the 1998 IJSBA Big Red Jet
Sports Tour completes its citrus swing next Saturday and Sunday (May 16-17)
in Ft. Lauderdale with the Riva Yamaha Surf Challenge. With two full days
of personal watercraft racing and the colorful IJSBA Performance Alley, the
Riva Yamaha Surf Challenge will be held at South Beach in Ft. Lauderdale.
Nearly 200 Pro and Expert riders will be competing in Ft.
Lauderdale in 12 classes of high-speed personal watercraft (PWC) in Round 2
of the eight-race 1998 IJSBA Big Red Jet Sports Tour, co-sponsored by the
McGraw Insurance Group. The International Jet Sports Boating Association
(IJSBA) produces the tour, while Riva Yamaha of nearby Pompano Beach is the
title sponsor for the nationally-televised IJSBA Riva Yamaha Surf
Challenge.
Florida's Chris MacClugage (Naples), Dustin Farthing (Stuart) and
Rick Roy (Hollywood), head the list of returning IJSBA Big Red Jet Sports
Tour 1997 champions who will be competing in the first surf event on the
national tour since the 1996 season when it stopped in Virginia Beach,
Virginia. MacClugage won the 1997 national championship in Pro Runabout
1200, while Farthing took top honors in Pro Sport and Roy won the Pro
Freestyle national title for the third consecutive year.
"I train and reside part-time in Hollywood (Fla.), so this is a big
challenge for me to compete in front of my friends," said Roy, originally
from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. "I got beat at last year's World
Championship (by Eric Malone) and I'm back with a vengeance this year.
It'll be fun to strut my stuff in Ft. Lauderdale. A win will go a long way
towards erasing the memory I have from last year's Worlds."
Among the other racers next weekend will be the other four 1997
IJSBA Rig Red Jet Sports Tour champions--Nicolas Rius, Marseilles, France
(Pro Runabout 785), Jeff Jacobs, El Cajon, Calif. (Pro Ski), Karine
Paturel, Beaucaire, France (Pro-Am Women Runabout) and Tera Crismon, Lake
Havasu City, Ariz. (Pro-Am Women Ski).
Riva Yamaha, the world's largest Yamaha PWC dealership, has signed
a two year agreement with the IJSBA to be the title sponsor of this event.
Riva Yamaha also provides primary support for the powerful,
factory-backed Riva Yamaha race team. The talented group includes Rius,
Jacobs, 1997 IJSBA World Champion Eric Malone (Pro Freestyle) and
hard-charging Dustin Motzouris (Pro Runabout 785), former Expert National
and World Champion.
This will mark the third time the IJSBA national tour, celebrating
it's 17th season, will hold a race in Ft. Lauderdale. The tour, which has
held 38 previous events in Florida, was on South Beach in 1985 and 1995.
With free admission to the event, action on the water gets underway
each day with practice
sessions followed by a full day of racing for the five Expert classes on
Saturday while the Pros will be on the water on Sunday. Saturday's Expert
practices run from 8:45 a.m. to 9:25 a.m. with racing from 1:50 to 3:30
p.m. On Sunday, the Pro practice sessions will run for an hour starting at
8:15 a.m. with racing from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Heat and qualifying races will be
held from 9:30 a.m. to Noon both days.
Special appearances each day on the water will be made by the
Showtime Stunt Show, starring legendary Freestyle racer Lloyd Burlew of
Satellite Beach, Fla.
Among the other weekend festivities will be Pro Autograph sessions
both Saturday and Sunday and the popular 'IJSBA hot bikini' swimsuit
competition at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The entire 1998 IJSBA Big Red Jet Sports Tour will be televised
nationally on ESPN and ESPN2. The 1998 IJSBA Riva Yamaha Surf Challenge
will first air on ESPN2 on Tuesday, June 2. Each of the one-half hour
highlight shows will be packaged within "Summer Sizzle", with repeat
airings for several weeks. "Summer Sizzle", airing on the West Coast in
prime time, is a beach-oriented show scheduled to include PWC racing, beach
volleyball, wakeboarding, and surfing. ESPN currently has a viewership of
72 million households while the rapidly-growing ESPN2 currently reaches 54
million U.S. homes.

Ft. Lauderdale This Weekend
France's Nicolas Rius Starts IJSBA Big Red Jet Sports Tour
Back on Top Heading into IJSBA Riva Yamaha Surf Challenge
for immediate release
FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif.--Picking up where he left off last year at
the top of the Pro Runabout 785 class point standings, France's Nicolas
Rius will be looking for his first victory of the year at the IJSBA Riva
Yamaha Surf Challenge to be held this weekend on South Beach in Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla.
Rius was the fast qualifier and finished second in the featured
class last weekend in Titusville, Fla. as the IJSBA Big Red Jet Sports Tour
opened its 17th year of national tour races for professional watercraft
racers.
This weekend, Rius and nearly 200 Pro and Expert riders, competing
in 12 classes for men and women, will hit the beach in Southern Florida.
The event, Friday through Sunday, will mark the first return to an
open-water surf environment midway through the 1996 season.
Riding for the powerful Riva Yamaha team, which is based near Ft.
Lauderdale in Pompano Beach, Rius will have his hands full attempting to
remain king of the hill in the featured class in the IJSBA Big Red Jet
Sports Tour, co-sponsored by Skat-Trak and the McGraw Insurance Group.
Rius, with his great qualifying race victory in Titusville, left
little doubt that he is once again the rider to beat, although Dustin
Farthing, of Stuart, Fla., the Titusville winner on a Sea-Doo racing boat,
will clearly be among the favorites in a class of favorites when the Pro
rides enter the water on Sunday. Rius benefitted greatly by the new scoring
system being used by the International Jet Sports Boating Association this
year which awards points for the qualifying race for the first time on the
national tour.
Rius enters Round 2 with a 73-71 edge over Farthing while Sea-Doo's
Chris Fischetti, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., is third with 61 points. Fourth
after one round is Rius' Riva Yamaha teammate Dustin Motzouris, a South
African who lives and trains in Ft. Lauderdale with 58. In fifth, with 51
points, is Bill Pointer Jr., Laguna Niguel, Calif., who rides for the
Greater Yamaha team, which is based in W. Palm Beach, Fla.
With his first victory in two years coming in Titusville, Victor
Sheldon, Vista, Calif., has his Kawasaki ahead of Fischetti, 80-68 in the
Pro Ski class.
Team Kawasaki star's Minoru Kanamori of Japan and Chris MacClugage
of Naples, Fla., are first and second in Pro Runabout 1200 with 75 and 73
points respectively while Sea-Doo racer Greg Wazileski, Colts Neck, N.J. is
first in Pro Sport. Brazil's Douglas Carvalho is currently leading
defending world champion Eric Malone, Duncansville, Pa., by three points in
Pro Freestyle. Carvalho and Malone both ride Yamahas
Multi-talented Tera Crismon, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., seemed to
have some extra motivation in Titusville after she participated in an
amazing behind-the-scenes tour of the nearby NASA Kennedy Space Center for
an ESPN2 segment last Saturday. She leads the Pro-Am Women Ski class after
her Titusville win, and, after a stunning third place finish as the only
female in the Pro Ski class, is in fourth place in the Pro Ski class.
After one race, Kelly Kurpil, Vero Beach, Fla., is the Pro-Am Women
Runabout point leader after her Titusville win on a Sea-Doo. She has 80
points, while Sea-Doo's Karine Paturel of France is second with 68.

Look, Tigershark has a boat in the order.
It is # 5 , I can not believe it..............
Maybe he will be able to hold on a little.

What SeaDoo was it in 6th that Tigershark beat out? It's startin' to look
like they might as well ban those pesky lil' 2-bangers from racing with the
triples; that will only effect SD but not for long as SD is apparently
working on its own triple, so I hear, which will probably soon migrate over
from its snow machines.
What Yamaha races is not a GP and more than likely what Kawa is running is
not an STX and so on... Only the HOOD is designed to look like they are
related to their name sakes..
Obviously they are mechanical marvels with the best of tunners and certanly
great riders...., but the MFG name means absolutely nothing other than they
spent a lot of money to get there!
And this class is good bye next year..(I'm happy about that), if only
because to justify the expense, mfgs then had to use success there to sell
real products which had nothing to with the race boats and that has led to
very misleading advertisements.
The fact is Bill Gates if he wanted to spend a few hundred million could
field a winning team riding a Gates 1200 with hulls from Bullet Marine and
hand built engines and by hiring the best tuners and great riders... Yamaha
proved that last year!...
